ASTONISHING OUTRAGE
IRISH COLLEENS WAYLAID PARTY STRIPPED OF CLOTHES PRANK OF ARMED RUFFIANS By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Oct. 13, 5.5 p.m. London, Oct. 12. A party of 24 pretty Derry colleens, returning to Londonderry after a dance at Port Leenan, were the victims of an astonishing outrage at the hands of 14 armed- and masked men near Clonmary. The girls had been the guests of the Royal Artillery at Port Leenan posts, who provided a motor omnibus to take them home in the small hours.
Masked men stopped the omnibus when it was half way on the journey. At the point of the revolver they forced the girls to submit to being driven to the lonely Isle of Doagh, which is a notorious haunt of potheen makers. Here the girls were compelled to take off their shoes, stockings and ball dresses, which were gathered 'in a heap. Petrol was then poured on the clothing and set ablaze.
The girls and the soldier driver were then lined up and told they were to be shot, but the masked men finally turned 'the girls adrift on the lonely countryside to find their way to Londonden-y without their shoes, stockings and coats.
