(To the Editor.) Sir, —I must thank Mr." McKenzie for his statement of the facts in reply to Mr. Cyril Turner’e. complaint about the account of my lecture at Hawera. I would like to add that I am in entire agreement with Mr. Turner when he

says: “If records are to be kept, let us keep them with precision.” I therefore presume to correct Mr. Turner when he says that the ascent of Mt. Cook by his late father, Syme, Mace and himself was the first' ascent by a party of amateurs. This is not so, as that honour belongs to Messrs. H. E. L. Porter and Marcel Kurz, who made the ascent and traverse of Mt. Cook on January 28, 1927. We were two years too late.—l am, etc., ROD SYME. Hawera, October 12,
