PENTHEUS WINS GUINEAS HIGH SYCE ANNEXES THE STAKES HIGHLAND'S RECORD IN TOORAK. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. _ Australian Press Association. Received Oct. 13, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, Oct. 13. The weather was delightfully fine for the Victorian Amateur Turf Club’s meeting, which opened to-day, and there was a large attendance. Silent Quest did a sterling performance in the Weltrir.- She was second to last at the five furlongs but' finished brilliantly. The owner is John Wren, who won the division of this event with Spear King a few seasons ago. Kaftan was prominent throughout and won the Debutante Stakes narrowly. Green Wave finished fast and seemed a good thing, but was beaten by Kaftan’ which was bred by Owner Clive Leonard, a member of the V.A.T.C. Committee. Rider Dempsey won previous! v on Sefton.
High Syce was third early in the race but won "the Caulfield Stakes comfortably. This is Trainer Holt’s sixtli success in the race. Duncan won previously on Royal Charter. Nightlark led always in the Steeples. He had 20 lengths’ lead at the halfmile but tired and was all out at the finish.
Pentheus was prominent throughout and won the Caulfield Guineas comfortably. He is engaged in the Derby, the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. His time is equal to the race record. He arrived here from Sydney on Thursday. Highland had his fourth successive victory in the Toorak Handicap. He has now won over £12,000 in stakes. His trainer is Holt and the jockey was Dunean. The owner, Mrs. Buxton, also has High Syce. Highland was second in this race last year. Results are:—

Withdrawals from the Caulfield Cup are Royal Simon, Lost Key and Some Quality, Racksa was scratched on the course at 12.50 yesterday for the Cup. TWO HORSES KILLED AT PERTH. THREE JOCKEYS SERIOUSLY HURT Received Oct. 13, 5.5 p.m. Perth, Oct. 13. Of the five horses which started in the Westralian Centenary Steeplechase yesterday only two finished. Tedwin and Autumn Day were killed. The jockeys Seastream, Brooks and Boots were seri- ’ onsly injured.
