A Napier traveller encountered A unique sight when returning from Taupo a few days ago, sighting a herd of deer close to the read at Opete. The animals , watched the ear go by with no sign of alarm. The annual street collection in aid of the St. John Ambulance Association was made in New Plymouth yesterday, the result being £3B os 4d, compared. with £45 last year. Collectors were busy from an early hour and a thorough canvass was made of the blocks into which the town and suburbs had been divided. Several troops of Boy Scouts assisted. An unusual incident at a farewell function in the Lepperton hall last night caused no little amusement. A blackbird that had evidently strayed in the hall during the day and roosted in the rafters, suddenly roused by the unusal stir, or perhaps thinking daylight i saving had been anticipated, flew distractedly about the hall seeking an avenue of escape.' None, however, was forthcoming until, making a wild swoop, it was ,brilliantly caught by Mr. E. A. Oliver with a dexterity that would have done credit to Syd Gregory or any other world famous fieldsman, and safely escorted .out-, side. ■ ‘ A six-roomed house in Ngamotu Road, New Plymouth, owned by Mr. G; B, Tylee and occupied by Mr. P. G. Budd, was totally destroyed by fire at about 8.30 o’clock last night in the absence of the occupants. The fire brigade, though not obliged to turn out to fires outside the borough, attended but was unable to do anything owing to the lack of water. The blaze had a strong hold when the brigade arrived and there was no indication where or how the fire had started. Part of the contents of a shed near the house were saved and an attempt made ,to save the shed, but it was burnt •to th© ground also. The insurance on the house was £3OO in the Southern Union Office. The furniture was insured for a siniilar amount. It is most unusual, but then you see it is not every day that we move into larger premises. As our [.resent shop is full of new season’s goods and more arriving by every boat, thinking we would be in our new premises, we are forced to make room, and are, therefore, running a removal said of new goods. A concert,, organised by Mrs. H. H. Skelton, will, commence at 8 o’clock, and the takings during the day are for local church work.
