WOMEN’S DIVISION

FA BAIERS’ UNION. Headquarters of the division are now situated in the new D.I.C. buildings. It was .-found- impossible to secure a suitable room in the Dominion Farmers* Institute at a rent finance would per? mit. A post office box has also been taken, and all . correspondence should now be addressed to P.O. Box 1601, AVellington. The new telephone number is 44.365, Wellington. .< The subject of provincial executives is naturally coming in for a good deal of discussion, and ideas are apt to be ft little hazy on the matter in one quarter or another. For ’ the information of branches it can be stated clearly, for instance, that the. formation of a provincial executive carries no obligation whatever to employ permanent housekeepers for which the executive would be responsible.- It is true that several branches have already applied for special housekeepers to be, permanently stationed in their districts, and this is certain*. ly the ultimate object of provincial executives. But it may be a long time before some districts are in a position to afford enough engagements for housekeepers, to have one. or more permanent* ly stationed in them. Branches are there- ’ fore advised to. speed up organisation, and to find out all the possibilities for the housekeeping scheme in their dis* tricts, iie., any local women who can be relied’ on to take . employment either regularly, or. on occasions, say, during the rush times at Christinas and shearing time. t Branches could also investigate opportunities for linking up with one another, .where feasible, with a view t<y co-operating-.; in the employment ,of housekeepers. .The scheme is young, and is still growing, and will continue k> grow for some time to come, so thai this is the time for. spade work and the laying of good foundations. . ~ , One rule relating to the scheme might be brought again to the notice of all - interested, “The services ,of housekeep- . ere are available for ail women and, children living on the land, preference being given to members of the Womenfy Division.” Only under very exceptional circumstances would a housekeeper be "supplied to a family not 7 living, on the land, and branches are not’ encouraged to entertain such applications. • ’ ' ■ The Okoke branch has set an ex* ‘‘cellent example by ■compiling a list, of six members whd would be willing, should occasion arise, to take children of neighbours into their homes and car(jifor them free of charge. . This. is to help any really-needy case in a time oil emergency. In districts where no permanent housekeeper has yet been established, all applications for help should be sent to headquarters, where all the business-will be carried on as usual, The Wanganui branch is preparing to run the book club on the lines oil which it-was formerly run by . Alarton, Since Alarton gave over the management, a habit has gradually been formed, of branches returning all parcels, of books direct to the office. The original plan w*as for the books to be passed on from group to group by the local Jibrar* ians until they were past further travelling. Occasionally a club member, would kindly replace ft worn-out boolt with a newer one,, thus helping the parcel to fulfil a longer mission. If groups can carry out this plan as forn> . erly, it will relieve headquarters Wanganui of a great deal of extra worh> and expense. ’ ■ ■ ; ■ / Waverlcy ’is to be congratulated oft" the first birthday of the branch having" f taken place some weeks ago. A very successful’ biAhday pa,rty was held, when-about SO members were present The branch number is now over 100. '
