Since the great earthquake on June 17 the road between Christchurch and, Greymouth has been impassable, but now that the slips and other damage have been repaired no difficulty is to be anticipated by motorists. The new Porter-Whitewater bridge has,; been completed, and the first car was driven across by a resident of the district last Friday. The Waimakariri is fordable, and the Arthur’s Pass-Otira Road is in good order. Some of the material is on the ground for the bridging of Broken River. A meeting of parishioners of Holy Trinity Church, Fitzroy, called to consider the appointment of a new vicar and to decide whether to place before the board of nomination the names submitted by Archdeacon F. G. Evans or Bishop Cherrington, resolved that the parish representatives should make their choice from the nominees submitted by Archdeacon Evans. In view of the present state of the finances the meeting found itself unable to accede to the suggestion of the Bishop that the stipend payable to the vicar be raised from £3OO to- £350 a year.
Each year sees increasing interest ing taken by dairy farmers in group herd-testing, as they realise the necessity of eliminating as far as possible the non-productive cows from their herds. There should, therefore, be flgood attendance of farmers at the annual meeting ot the Taranaki Co-opera-tive HerdHcsting Association, which will take place in the Workers’ Social Hall, New Plymouth, at 1 p.m. to-day. Mr. C. M. Hume, Dominion supervisor, will address members.
