The improvement in the condition of the Princess Royal is being steadily maintained, states an official wireless message.

The death took place at Christchurch yesterday . morning of Mrs. Annie Forbes, aged 86, mother of the Hon. G. W. Forbes,' Minister of Lands and Agriculture.

Canon H. R. B. Gillespie, vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Fitzroy, ias intimated to the vestry that he intends to resign from his charge shortly on account of ill-health. The appointment of his successor has not been decided.

The Rev. H. S. Hamilton, son of Canon Staples Hamilton, who, since his ordination, has been assistant curate of Christ Church’, Wanganui, has been appointed to the charge of the district of Whangamomona (Taranaki) in the diocese of Waikato.

The professorial board of the University of Otago has selected Messrs Noel S. Woods and James Campbell Dakin as the Otago candidates for the Rhodes Scholarships, reports the Press Association from Dunedin. Both are art students born in the Otago province, and intend to complete their B.A. degrees this year. Mr. Woods is 21 years of age and Dakin 20. The Admiralty announces that Admiral Sir Rudolf Bentinck has been placed on the retired list at his own request, and Vice-Admiral Sir. Hugh Watson has been promoted Admiral, states an Official Wireless message. Admiral Bentinck entered the Navy in 1881, and has had a distinguished career. He was in command of the Royal Naval College, Osborne, in 1913, and was chief of staff to Admiral Lord Beatty on H. M. S. Lion when the Battle of Jutland was fought.

The death occurred in Gore last week of Mr. Thomas John Quin, who, over 20 years ago, was in in business, in Eltham as a chemist. He was born in Caversham, Dunedin, 51 years ago, and served his apprenticeship as a chemist in that city. After residing at Roxburgh for a few years, he sold out his business and removed to Eltham. Oh leaving Eltham, Mr. Quin was dispenser at the Dunedin hospital for a time. Then he went to Gore, where he opened, a new business, which was carried on continuously except when he served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces.

Mr. Percy Frank Bayley died at Auckland on October 1 at the age of 87 years. Mr. Bayley was a son of the Rev. George Bayley, who came from England about 1850 and settled in the Omata district. He was one of the last three surviving veterans of the Battle of Waireka, the others being Mr. Thomas Veale and Mr. John Andrews. For many years he was a resident of Normanby, He is survived by his widow and. one son and two daughters, Mrs. A. B. Stewart (Auckland) and Mrs. Tudor Baker (Hawke's Bay).

The appointment of the Rev. E. Lionel Harvie, vicar of Cambridge, to the position of rector of St. Bartholomew’s parish, Adelaide, Australia, has been announced. He will succeed Archdeacon Moyes, who has been chosen as the Bishop of Armidale, New South Wales. The appointment is an important one, St. Bartholomew’s being a large city parish, Mr. Harvie was elected from a large number of nominees. He has ten-’ dered his resignation to the Bishop of Waikato, and expects to leave for Australia at the end of November. Ordained deacon by Bishop Averill in 1913, Mr. Harvie was created a priest in the following year, and his first curacy was at Stratford. He was subsequently curate at Hamilton, vicar at St. Andrew’s, Inglewood, Taranaki, and vicar at St. Andrew’s, Epsom, Auckland, for a period of eight years. He became the vicar, at Cambridge in 1927 and the rural dean of iiariiilton in 1928.
