The house, which was the home of Mr. Charles Dyer, farm worker, and his family, was demolished. Mr. Dyer had brought his wife to Te Awaniutu earlier in the evening to go to her mother’s bedside at Thames. He returned home at about 10.30 to find the walls and ceiling of the house in flames. There were three of his children, four children of deceased relatives and Mr. Dyer's father, aged 82 years, in the house.- One child was wandering about in a dazed condition in the dining room, which was burning fiercely when Mr. Dyer dashed in. He saved this child and aroused the others, ■ who were asleep. Mr. Dyer, eenr.,’ when aroused, grasped the knob of the door of his room, but could not open the door, so he climbed through a window just- in time. The building, owned by the estate of a deceased relative of Mr. Dyer, was insured, but the furniture and effects, valued at £3OO, were uninsured. They are a total less.
