THE RUGBY UNION’S CONGRATULATIONS.

(To the Editor.) . Sir,—ln yesterday’s issue of the Daily News, under .the heading of “Control of Football,” the following is noted: — “It was resolved to extend to H. G. McLean the union’s congratulations on his selection to represent New Zealand.” Against whom was this footballer selected to play—is all football enthusiasts of Taranaki know —against the Maori team? Very well; is it not only reasonable to expeet that a resolution should be passed by the union extending its congratulations to any Taranaki Maori players who may have been selected to represent their race against the other New Zealand team? Yet, perusal of the report of the meeting fails to indicate that any such resolution was passed. Is this offering any encouragement to our young Maori players? It seems to me that this is hardly fair to the players concerned. - The report of the match, “All Blacks v. Maoris, makes interesting reading matter, as it gives us a good indication of the calibre of the two Opunake fiveeighths, C. Hohaia and Tui Robinson. These players were matched against Cooke and Liiburne, admittedly the best pair of five-eighths in New Zealand. Yet apparently the Opunake players more than held their own, as Cooke scored only one try, which could have been scored by another man, according to your report, while Lill v.rne was kept very much in his place. It is my earnest hope that our sole selector for this district has read and inwardly digested this piece ■of information. It was nothing short of shameful that players such as these should not have gained representative honours in the A team till the close of the season, when one of the players concerned was then unavailable. However, we are all looking for big improvements next year, either in the method of selection in this large (too large for one man) district, or in the appointee to the selectorship. —I am, etc., “DISGUSTED.” Eltham, Oct. 4.
