URBAN LANDS BILL OPPOSED. ACTIVITIES QF PAST MONTH. 1 '' .xThe monthly meeting of the Patea Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. H.. Ramsbottom), Crs. C. R. Honeyfield, A. Christensen, F. Naismith, G. Pettigrew, B. Scott and C. Carey. The Girl Guides Association wrote thanking the council for the use of the borough chambers for meetings during the year. The borough solicitor wrote advising that he and Cr. Christensen had recently interviewed Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., in Wellington and had been successful in overcoming the legal difficulties in connection with certain borough leases. Mr. Christensen said Mr. Dickie had given them every assistance and it was decided that a letter.of thanks be forwarded to the member; Regarding tlie;;lJjtban Farm Lands Bill it was resolved that/the member for the district be notified that the council objected.to the passing- of the Bill and suggested its posjtpJpjement for 12 months. In connection with the circularising of business men regarding community lighting the town clerk said no ..replies had yet been received. It was decided .to ask permission from the Harbour Board to remove metal from a new pit At’the heads. Middlesex, Egmont Street South (Beach Road) and Devon Street had been graded and Victoria and Hadfield Streets had been patched with pit metal, reported, the streets supervisor. A start had been made on the metalling of the newly graded streets, the metal being taken from the pit at the end of the old beach road. This work would be continued as weather permitted. Footpaths in Bedford Street had been chipped and cleaned, also four chains in Egmont Street. The electrical engineer reported:— The supply has been continuous during the month of September, no electrical or mechanical trouble being experienced. The head of waler at the hydro has been above the average for this period of the year. The Diesel plant has been completely overhauled and is now running very efficiently. With the dry weather approaching the demand on this plant will be much greater than it has been during the winter months. The hydro is now due for an overhaul and this work will be carried out as soon as the head of water has dropped sufficiently for the plant to be shut down for approximately two days. The units generated were 29,448, the peak load being 10(3 k.w. High tension fuses have been renewed at the Kakaramea sub-station. Duplicate low tension lines have been run to Deane’s and Looker’s buildings to carry the increased ' load which has recently been installed. Four lighting and five heating points have been installed and a few of the old installations have been tested. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. IT. G. Dickie, M.P., spent the weekend at Hawera and left yesterday for Wellington, Mr. E. A. Pacey, Mayor of Hawera, is again laid aside with influenza and was unable last night to attend the meeting of the South Taranaki Power Board. The death occurred suddenly on Saturday of Mr. T. A. Ballantine, South Road, Hawera. Mr. Ballantine, who was 64 years of agd, fiza s' the third son'of the late Mr. and M£s. Peter Ballantine, Wanganui, whefcOe entered the postal service when 14 years of age. He was stationed at Patea, Blenheim, Wellington and Wakapuaka, and then became postmaster at Petone, retiring and removing to Hawera seven years ago. While living at Blenheim as a young man he was an enthusiastic footballer and also enjoyed hunting.jM-rs. Ballantine survives her husband, and there are two sons and one daughter, Mrs. J. Livingston, Mercmere. GENERAL ITEMS. From 7.30 till 11.30 last night the South Taranaki iPower Board considered applications for the position of secretary. There were 74 applications from all "parts of the Dominion and each was read and briefly discussed. The result was that nine of the applications were selected for further consideration, and the board decided to deal with them at a meeting on Friday afternoon, Members present last night were Messrs. J. B. Murdoch (chairman), E. Long, E. A. Washer, C. J. Preston, N. C. Innes and J. W. Snowdon. At a special meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board yesterday by-laws were discussed and adopted. There were present Messrs. J, S. McKay (chairman), F. Gillanders,! A; G. Larcom, A. Campbel), T. A. Winks,'. E .A. Washer and E. J. Gifford. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. W. G. Simpson and L. Nairn. As the • ‘anirual deputation of the Methodist Home and Maori Missions the Rev. R. B. Gosnell, New Plymouth, visited Hawera on Sunday and preached to large congregations in the Methodist Church. His relation of personal experiences of church work in the backblocks was very interesting. Last evening Mr. Gosnell gave an illustrated address on the work of, the Methodist Church in New Zealand, , a large audience being keenly interested in his account of the difficulties encountered and the successes achieved by the representatives of the church.. In the Auroa hall this evening Mr. J. M Smith, instructor in agriculture, will give’ an illustrated lecture on ensilage-making.-The lecture has Been arranged by the Auroa branch of the Farmers Union. •
