NEW ZEALANDERS BEATEN MAIN EVENT TO LOQUACIOUS NIGHTMARCH ’ RUNS SECOND SQUATTERS TO FIRST ACRE By Telegraph l —Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received Oct. 7, 9 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 7. Fine weather and a large attendance favoured the Australian Jockey Club’s second day of the spring carnival at Randwick to-day. The New Zealand horse Cereniony, after a brilliant victory in the Tramway Handicap, was a popular fancy for The Shorts, but ran poorly throughout and was not once raisimr his supporters’ hopes. A further disappointment awaited the New Zealanders in the richly-endowed Breeders’ Plate. Pomp, which carried the pronounced support of his connections, was not able to do better than gain second place. The outstandiiig’ performance of the day’s racing ' was . given by Nightmarch in the Metropolitan. Carrying 101 b. penalty due to his Epsom victory, he ran prominently throughout and looked like a winiiCr ‘at. the distance, but a brilliant finish 1 by Loquacious robbed him of vietdry'in 1 the final strides. New Zealand’s ‘‘lrion.’ horse,” First Acre, brightened what' was otherwise a disappointing day "for his countrymen by winning thd" 'Squatters’ Handicap in smart fashion;'' Results arij-~ ' THE SHORTS HANDICAP.
