' PROGRAMME OF GOOD SPORT. WINNERS MOSTLY WELL BACKED. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last Night. A good day’s sport -was provided when the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting was concluded at Ellerslie today. Two warm favourites in Chief Link and Refresher were successful and all the other winners with the exception of Eager Rose, w’ho effected a big surprise in the last race, were all well supported. Motere was a shade better fancied than Sea Cob for' the Normanby Handicap, with Currajong also in demand. Currajong and Brampton attended to the pacemaking and were the leaders into the straight from Mountain Guide, Kawainga, Sea Cob and Arikitoa, with Motere last. Sea Cob headed the leader at the distance and came on to win by half a length from Arikitoa, who defeated. Motere by a similar margin. Currajong was fourth, followed by Brampton and Alloy. Sea Cob is steadily on the improve.- Arikitoa is racing consistently and should get a turn soon. Motere finished on well and should be worth remembering, while Currajong and Alloy may also -be worth keeping in mind. ELYSIANOR PERFORMS WELL. For the Manukau Hurdles King’s Guard was a solid favourite, with Elysianor and Golden W’edding also well backed. Catonian made most of the running, with Elysianor, Ramblin’ Kid, Horomea and Ah Wera handy. Catonian and Elysianor turned into the straight several lengths clear of Horomea, Elysianor drawing out after crossing the last fence to win by a length from Catonian. Horomea was three lengths away third and Golden V\ edding was fourth, then coming Glenotus and Karamu; Elysianor won well and Catonian confirmed his promising form oi the first day. Horomea was finishing on, Golden Wedding disappointed. King’s Guard fell when going well at the fourth fence, while Sir Archie and Ramblin’ Kid also toppled over and Atareria was pulled up. HAVERING BEATS SILVERMINE. Silvermine was a good favourite for the Epsom Handicap, with Havering and High Finance also solidly supported. Awarere was first to begin and then Billikins led for two furlongs, when Knightlike took charge. Knightlike and Billikins were first round the bend from Kingfield, Havering, Awarere and Silvermine. Havering took charge at the distance to win by three-parts of a length from .Silvermine, who beat Awarere by -half a length. Takutama was fourth, with Billikins and Value next. Havering won nicely and is an improved horse. Silvermine went a fine race with his big weight and is nearing the top of his form. HUNTING CR'Y IN FORM. Star Stranger, Piuthair and Amor were best backed for the King Edward Memorial, Handicap. Hunting Cry, ;Amoi and Bennie;attended, to the pacemaking and they were the leaders into the straight from High Pitch, Barometer and Vertigern. Hunting Cry came on strongly in the run home and won by a length and a-quarter from Vertigern, who finished fairly to beat High Pitch by half a length. Singleton was fourth, followed by In the Shade and Corinax. Star Stranger did not run to form and Piuthair was well beaten. In t'he Shade was unlucky, .being taken back from a decent position to last in the middle stages through another horse coming back on him. Vertigern will be improved by the race and should scon do better. Hunting Cry won well and his effort made the Guineas form read well. LADY SPALPEEN’S STEEPLES. A good pool on the Onehunga Steeplechase saw ~Sea Comet 1 and Askari best backed. Town Rambler and Lady Spalpeen led for a round, when Lady Spalpeen, Sea Comet and Calithe drew away from the field.' Lady Spalpeen was always clear in the final stages and beat Sea Comet by four lengths, Calithe being 15 lengths away third and Rahepoto fourth. Town Rambler fell and King Fame was pulled up. .Askari did not jump well in the first round and got too far back to have any chance. CHIEF RULER SCORES AGAIN. . All started iff, t'he Musket Stakes and Chief Link, who drew No. 1, was. backed down to a very short price. : Chief Link moved first to be soon joined by Sight Draft, while Oil King and-Chry-sblogy were well up. Chief Link: was always going well and-won very comfortably by a length from Sight Draft, who beat Chrysology by four lengths. Oil King was fourth, followed by Grand Spirit and Bells of Shandon. The winner is a big fellow by Chief Ruler from that good mare Silver Link, and he is a fine galloper. He should win some good races this season. REFRESHER PROVES USEFUL. Refresher was heavily backed in the Hobson Handicap, Bombarder being the only other backed to any extent. Refresher was in Charge early and made play into the straight from Valquette, Gay Cockade, and Appellant. Refresher ran on strongly at the finish and had no difficulty in winning by three-parts of a length from Gay Cockade, who beat Appellant by two and a-half lengths. War Officer was fourth, followed by Good Boy. and Valquette. The winner is a three-year-old full-brother to Tea Bell and should prove useful in open-company. SURPRISE BY EAGER ROSE;. An outsider in Eager Rose effected a surprise in the Liverpool Handicap, for which Mervette, Otairi and Merry Mint were best backed. Eager Rose ran to the front in a couple of furlongs and showed the way into the straight to Gemlight, Le Choucas and Maori Boy. Eager Rose .stayed on in the run home to win by a length from Le Choucas, Merry Mint being a head away third. Ohinemuri was fourth, with Standfast and Respirator- next. The winner was one of the outsiders of the field and returned a dividend o>f over half a century. Merry Mint was hampered in the run home by Le Choucas hanging in on him, and this cost him second place.
