BRICKLAYERS’ OVERTIME

RETROSPECTIVE CLAIM RIDICULED By Telegraph—Press Association Auckland, Oct. 7. Mr. Wright, secretary of the Auckland Employers’ Association, ridicules the statement by Mr. Purtell that, on Mr. Justice Blair’s award, brick, tile and pottery workers will be able to claim £5909 to cover overtime for the past, five years. Mr. Wright says Mr. Purtell ignores the fact that the wages previously paid were in accordance with the awards of the Arbitration Court, and he takes for granted that an opinion expressed by a temporary judge of the court, in making a new award, will nullify the previous awards made by five successive judges of the court. This is far from being the case, as an award can be upset only by the judgment of the court of appeal on a question of jurisdiction.
