The motor-ship Manunda (9115 tons), while turning into the Port River, apparently got out of control. The vessel snapped a hawser connected to a tug and crashed stern first into the Birkenhead wharf, where an auxiliary ketch was crushed to matchwood and sank immediately. A huge gap was made in the wharf. Piles two feet in diameter were snapped off, and two other ketches were badly damaged; The owners managed to scramble to safety. . The damage to the wharf is estimated at £3OOO, and to the ketches £2OOO. The Maminda’s stern was badly dented.
