OKATO NEWS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) .Though the warm weather of -the last few clays has brought a -noticeable growth in the pastures, the cheese made at the local factories is not increasing, and the daily output in most instances shows a decrease on last year’s figures The: tendency of the London market, in face of accumulated stocks, estimated at-double that of last year, is causing cheese producers, to feel quite . optimistic. “' v . At‘ the residence of Mr. Perry Putt on -Saturday evening a number -of friends paid a surprise visit. It was a very.happy evening,- but was -somewhat marred by some subtle humourist who ■spread taeks bn the road,- puncturing the tyres of almost every'car, ; - • At the Stoney River -horse fair there was-only a small yarding and competition was very restricted., Except for : animals of a heavy type, there was practically no: enquiry. •. - Good .progress has: been made with the fillings at-the new Katikara bridge, and bne can now get a good idea of ' the, •great improvement this job will bring’ about.' The elimination of the two extremely .bad corners-at the’ bottom and the improved grade will quite transform this piece of road, when the. work is finally completed. The deviation at the south side of Timaru te now being metalled, and will soon be ready for -traffic. Messrs Julian have almost completed the Kaihihi bridge, and most of the.: carpenters and'men engaged there left dur in the week-end for freshffields. Th ere was a perfect day locally for the opening of the fishing season, and both the Kaihihi and Stoney. Rivers were well patrolled. Fish were rising exceedingly well fol’ so early in the season, and it was a very unlucky fisherman who ended up the day with “a fisherman’s luck.” “ - ;
