RACING AT ELLERSLIE

GOOD SPORT SEEMS ASSURED MITCHELSON CUP APPEARS OPEN. TARANAKI GALLOPERS FAVOURED.

(“By

Moturoa.”)

Big fields of first-class horses will be the order with t‘he opening of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring gathering to-day, and the public will have plenty of food for thought in sorting out the prospective winners. The programme opens with the TRIAL HURDLE RACE. Of 400 sovs. One mile and three-quarters

Golden Wedding and Cybele are promising hurdlers, but they lack recent racing and the form shown by Ah Went, Lady Spalpeen and Sir Archie this spring may make more appeal to the bettors. GREAT NORTHERN GUINEAS.

Eaglet is the Auckland fancy, and this brilliant and consistent filly deserves attention. The hopes of the South Island will lie in the Hunting Song colt, Pink Coat, and brilliant track efforts dispel the supposition that the left-handed tracks will worry him. Hunting Cry easily accounted for Admiral Drake in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, the latter giving Eaglet a good go at Wanganui, so that form puts the Hawke’s Bay galloper into the discussion. Supremacy has done no work this season and will be passed over in favour of Leader, False Scent and Refresher. Eaglet appears likely to see the shortest price, but there will be strong support for Pink Coat. SHORTS HANDICAP. . Of 500 sovs. Six furlongs.

Benzora is highly prized' "y his party, and his recent racing should’.stand him in good stead. Gold Mohej/’ failed at Avondale but she is good, Vallar may not be quite ready, but Lady Quex is a top-liner in the discussions, and Eaglet’s form certainly bears out this confidence. High Finance and Havering might find the company too good. Awarere ran his best race for some time at Avondale, and is obviously on the improve. Of the lightweights Polyxena and Te Atiawa are expected'to fare best. The weight of public opinion at the finish may lie between Lady Quex, Awarere and. Gold Money, with Polyxena a dangerous lightweight. MITCHELSON CUP.

Star Stranger seems to be back somewhere near his best form, and an exposition of his best would make him a tough proposition to head off with all his weight. Historic is one of the* most improved handicappers racing, and the best has certainly not yet been seen of him. Prince Humphrey has a host of Auckland admirers, but many will pin their faith in the brilliant mare from Te Awamutu, Prodice, who ran a great race in the Avondale Cup. Piuthair will welcome the going a . trifle soft, but., she is a good mare in at luxurious poundage. Of those further down, Desert Glow and Talisker make appeal. Historic is in form and a form horse is hard to beat in the idea of many judges, and for that reason he may go out better fancied than Prodice and Star Stranger. HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE. Of 400 sovs. Two miles and a-half.

The Pakuranga Hunt Cup winner, Pompeius, may have more friends than j the improving Sea Comet. Calithe, who . is well forward, will not lack friends.

WELCOME STAKES. Of 1000. sovs. Five, furlongs.

Royal Ruler and Lineage are the only winners in tiie field, though the seconds of Isa, Chrysology and Imam in t were full of merit, and in running a good second to the flying machine, Simba, Chrysology put up a splendi' 1 perform; ance which gave promise of an early improvement. A close finish may find Chrysology, Imamint and Isa contesting the issue. GORDON HANDICAP, Of 400 sovs. One mile.

Prince Vai accounted for a double at Avondale in dashing style. He has form in his favour and may be preferred to Kawainga and Good Boy. FLYING HANDICAP. Of 500 sovs. Seven furlongs.

Old Reremoana tops the list. A slight improvement on his form at Wanganui would see him running prominently. The brilliant Great Charter is not sound. Lucy Rose may need the race. Flying Juliet is being discussed ; at; headquarters, and the distance should suit the Romeo mare. Maori Boy has a handy impost, but needs a strong boy to keep him going. Otairi, King Emerald, Standfast and Ohinemuri all have their quota of admirers, and if a good horseman could be procured for the improving Roi de Vai he might be one to give the backers a shock. The issue appears to be very open, and the trio. that may attract most attention are Flying Juliet, Reremoana, and Ohinemuri.

With form at the Hawke’s Bay spring meeting last week as. a guide, the punters should have assistance, in sorting out winners at the Napier Park fixture to-day. # * * *. Warworn ran a good third to Simba and Chrysology and promises to be made a much better favourite than Princess Betty in the Prince of Wales Stakes. # # • * Manifesto did the best in this company at Hastings, but a newcomer in Don Quixote may be better favoured than I’m Alone and Best Friend in the Trial Handicap. -g . # # * In the Greenmeadows Hurdles Peshwa and Jen were a pair who ran well laistweek. ,4 «• * * Old Kick Off has struck form and many will want to follow him in the Park Stakes. « # # * If Chopin is reserved for the hack “seven” opinion may favour Sylvan Dell in the Ahuriri Handicap. ■* «= * * Queen's Choice may be preferred to Rouex in the Highweight Handicap. * & Toxeuma failed badly at Hastings, but at that meeting he was far from artistically handled, and if given a better spin to-day his race last week should fit him to meet Sylvan Dell and Royal Lineage. # # * * The programme concludes with the Country Handicap. My Own and Chopin, •w-ho both ran well at Hastings, are expected to run prominently, and many may favour My Own. GOOD FIELDS AT KUROW.
