SOUTH POLE FLIGHT.
COMMANDER BYRD MAKES READY. Commander Byrd is preparing for his flight over tlie South Pole. The flight is the culmination of the work of scientific research in the polar regions, hich has been proceeding steadily for-months. A comprehensive record of the expedition is being filmed by Willard Vandeveer and Joseph Rucker, Paramount News cameramen. Many thrilling episodes have already been “shot” which, in due course, will be seen by motion, picture audiences throughout the world. Vandeveer will fly with Byrd over the Pole and will take the first motion' picture of that inaccessible spot, hitherto seen only by the eyes of Scott, Amundsen and cue or two other* explorers. The attack by killer whales on a small boat party led by Commander Byrd; Commander Byrd’s rescue of two i men who had fallen into the icy water; and the return of Professor Larry Gould’s party after they had been, rescued by plane, are among the thrilling i items that will be included in the film, i 1 LURE OF THE UNKNOWN. FILM EXPLORERS TELL. There is a lure of the unknown, and in the solitude of the forest, plain or mountain. Solitude is unbelievably satisfying after the hurly-burly of cities. That is the opinion of Ernest Schoedsack and Merian Cooper, makers of the Paramount picture “The Four Feathers,” who spent a year camera-hunting in the wilds of Soudanese Africa. “Thirty days of civilised .contacts are enough for both of us," said Cooper. “Modern society is mighty complex, demanding niceties of social form, speech and dress which tax all of a human’s resources. Still, civilisation has a place in our hearts. The thrills of starting and the .joy. of returning are the best things about exploring. After a year hi the wilds, civilisation, by its contrasts, ■ fills us with amazed comfort. But after I thirty days we are ready to move oil.”'
