FARMERS’ UNION LEADER

SOUTH TARANAKI’S CONFIDENCE. PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE MEETS. Correspondence relating to the con troversy concerning the Dominion pre si dent, Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P.> was tak’ei in committee by the South Taranak provincial executive of the Farmers .Upion 'yesterday.. On ? the iresumptioj of the open meeting a motion express ing complete: confidence in Mr. INrtspi as president was carried. ■The proposed visit of a contingent oi British 'farmers to New Zealand nexl year was mentioned in a letter from the Dominion secretary, who sent copies of itineraries submitted to the British National Farmers’ Union. There was one itinerary for the whole party and two for divided parties, the proposai being that they should divide at Rotorua and travel separately to - Christchurch. If the party of 80 travelled together they would go from Stratford to Hawera on Saturday, March 1, spend Sunday at Hawera and leave next day for Wanganui. If the party were divided No. 1 section would reach Hawera on Monday, March 3, and leave by train the following day for Wanganui. It was agreed, to deal with' the matter at the next meeting. Several members had mentioned the possibility of a tour forj South Taranaki farmers next year, the. secretai-y reported, and it would be well to begin preparations early, as many details would have to be arranged. Mr. Carter said he was strongly in favour of an annual tour. Those who went to the South Island some months ago would welcome another opportunity, and he believed a large number would go next time. A trip would appeal to young people, for whom it would be a fine education. The young people who went with the last party were greatly pleased with some of the districts they saw, and gathered much valuable information. Mr. Berry strongly favoured a trip. The Dominion outlook should be fostered, and farmers especially should take every opportunity to substitute a Dominion for a local outlook. It did them good to look into other industries and find out what other people’s troubles

were. Some discussion took place concerning the districts which might be visited, the Waikato, the Bay of Plenty and the east coast being mentioned favourably, while a-suggestion that a tour might be made In private motor-ears aroused some enthusiasm. Finally it was agreed that the question should be brought up at the next meeting. • /Trouble experienced by farmers, to whom goods were consigned at railway flag stations was mentioned by Mr. Pettigrew, who said it often happened that after receiving advice of the consignment of goods a farmer would have to pay two or three visits to the station before he found them. If a farmer eould i give a telephone number on the con- ; signment note he would gladly pay the 'cost of a telephone call in order that a railway official might give him accurate advice as to the despatch of his goods. Other members supported Mr. Pettigrew’s suggestion and it was decided to ask the Railway Department to make ■ the suggested provision. Another suggestion from Mr. Petti-1 grew, that efforts should he made to obtain a simplified form of analysis of manures, was adopted, the secretary being asked to communicate with the Agricultural Department on the subject. The meeting, the executive’s regular one, -was held at Hawera. Those present were Messrs E. J. Betts (chairman), 11. I. Crocker, A. W. King, M. W. Baker, A.-D, Johnson, H. Thrush, J. A.
