FITZROY SURF CLUB MEETS
BIG ATTENDANCE OF MEMBERS. If anything can be judged from attendance at the annual meeting, the Fitzroy Surf Club should have a successful season during the coming summer. Over 50 members and intending members, who all displayed keen enthusiasm, were presided over by the president, Mr. W. N. Stephenson. The report and balance-sheet, already published, were adopted, the only comment being by Mr. 11. J. Thomas, who stressed the lack of support received from the club members at the dances held during the season. The receipts from the dances were £l7 10s, and"the expenditure amounted to £35. If it had not been for such a big loss in this way the club would have been able to build a club house and acquire other facilities, lip said. The chairman thought the dances should not be abandoned altogether as the social activities of the club should not be neglected. The following officers were elected: — President, Mr. W. N. Stephenson; vicepresidents, Messrs P. E. x Stainton, H. V. S. Griffiths and L. A. Nolan; honorary surgeon, Dr. R. J. R. Mecredy; club captain, Mr. C. 11. Plumtree; vice-cap-tain, Mr. W. J. Toomey; honorary secretary, Mr. H. J. Thomas; honorary treasurer, Mr. J, M. Hutchinson; honorary auditor, Mr. L. Lovell; executive, Messrs K. Staunton, P. W. Wright, J. W. Moorhead, Misses L. Hammond and J. Bennett; delegates to the Taranaki centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society, Messrs J. W. Moorhead and C l . H. Plumtree; delegate to Taranaki Swimming Centre, Mr. H. J. Thomas; handicappers, Messrs C. H. Plumtree and H. J. Thomas; timekeepers, Messrs J. Bennett, V. Dalgleish and J. Roberts; starter, Mr. J. W. Moorhead; life-saving captain, Mr. P. W. Wright; club selectors, Messrs H. J. Thomas, C. H. Plumtree and P. W. Wright; ladies’ club captain, Miss L. Hammond; diving instructors, Messrs E. McGinty, R. Parkinson and W. J. Thomas; swimming instructors, Messrs 11. J. Thomas, C. H. Plumtree and. V. Walshe; ladies’ instructors, Misses Rie'iardson and P. Tate; judges of diving, Messrs G.. E. Jago, C. Brown and A. H. Blennerhassett, Attention was called to the fact that one of the members had. not received from the centre a medal which was due to him, and Mr. Plum tree explained that a function was usually held at the opening of the season at which trophies and medals were presented. A cup was offered to the club by two members, Messrs C. Moles and Mclsaac, who had made the trophy themselves. It was decided to allocate the cup to a four-men team life-saving contest between the East End and Fitzroy Clubs, as any teams as practicable to be entered. Forty-six new members were elected. Recommendations were made to the committee that a ladies’ life-saving team be formed, and that delegates to the centre be instructed to apply for a new reel. Mr. Moorhead asked if steps could he taken to ereet a club-house- at the beach.
It would be a great convenience to many of the members who had to come from a distance. The suggestion was considered by the chairman to be a good one, and he thought the Fitzroy Park Society would do all it could to help. He suggested the setting up of a special committee to endeavour to arrange the finances and confer with the society. Organised races were suggested for club nights, and the matter was left to the committee, from which a subcommittee would be appointed to control the club nights. The secretary and the treasurer were voted a joint honorarium of £5 5s for their services-. Votes of thanks were accorded the chairman and the Press.
