OPUNAKE NEWS.

THE FOOTBALL, CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the committee in connection with the recent Opunake Football Club celebrations was held in St. Patrick’s Hall on Tuesday night. Members present were: Messrs T. S. Hickey (chairman), W. J. S. Dudley, D. Mourie, G.'Hammond, R.' Bowman and the secretary (E. Smith). The balancesheet showed receipts totalling £66 16s 3d, door-takings amounting to £44. Other amounts were made up by. donations and rebates. The total expenditure was £5B 4s 3d, leaving a credit from the ball of £8 12s. The largest payment was for supper arrangements, £3O 17s 6d. From the credit of £8 12s presentation photographs cost £6 6s, and a further presentation. photo will leave a ; Credit of about £2, which is to be handed to the Opunake Football Club. The committee agreed that the results were very satisfactory. The secretary paid a tribute to the chairman for the work he had done. The secretary and committee are to be complimented on the success of the functions in celebrating the Opunake Club’s championship victory. FARMERS’ UNION. The monthly meeting of the Opunake branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday, Mr. A. Pettigrew presiding over a good attendance. Mr. J. F. Shepherd, a well-known local breeder of the Jersey cult, delivered an address on the dairy cow. He was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. GIRL GUIDES. The. monthly meeting of the executive of the Girl Guides Association was held on Tuesday afternoon. Those present were: Mesdames C. A. Smith (president), Baylis, ft. S. Jenkin, F. Hammond. W. H. Burgess, J. G. Wheatly and T. N. Watt (secretary). Apologies were received from Mesdames T. S. Hickey and E. Jenkins.. It was decided to present Miss Mouri with a lieutenant’s brooch. The Guide Captain reported that one Brownie had won her wings and been promoted to the guides. The meeting unanimously decided to pay the secretary's expenses to provincial meetings. Mesdames R. Jenkin and Watt were appointed to organise a concert, to be held during the second week in November to raise funds to send the Guides and Brownies to the rally to be held in New Plymouth on November 23. It was decided to hold a flag bridge evening on October 0 at Miss Feaver’s residence. ' ' EUCHRE PARTY. The Catholic euchre party, held in St. Patrick’s Hall last Friday evening, was very successful. The ladies’ prizes were won by Mrs. Langton 1, Mrs, Ebbett 2, Miss M. Crofsky consolation. The men’s prizes were awarded to Victor Butterini 1, J. Foskin 2, P. Foskin consolation. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies. GENERAL. Matters in connection with the Opunake £20,000 harbour loan are moving quietly. Opposition to the loan is keen and energetic. Petitions for presentation to Parliament opposing the loan are in circulation. The loan supporters admit the strength of the opposition, but point out that. £20,000 spent on the liarbour would considerably help in providing work for the unemployed. A large number of local residents

took to the air on Sunday, when Captain MacGregor, of Hamilton Airways, instituted a pleasure flying service for the day. The Surf Club benefited to the extent of about £B. Mr. Wiesnewskl’s place was the site chosen for ascending and alighting, Mr. ■ Gamlin intends to rebuild on his old site at the seaside, and he says it will he fireproof. The building will be equal, if not superior, to any existing on the waterfront. A-little difficulty is found in the Town Board enforcing the by-laws regarding the area to be built on. An eighth of an acre is the minimum, under .the by-laws,--with sufficient space -between each ‘building.
