FITZROY TENNIS CLUB

ENTHUSIASTIC ANNUAL MEETING. REVIEW OF YEAR’S OPERATIONS. There was a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Fitzroy Methodist Tennis Club last evening, the Rev. R. B. Gosnell being in the chair. The balance-sheet to April 30, lu’-J, showed a credit of 19s lid, the chief items : of' revenue being subscriptions £74, winter play £l4 7s 9d and sundry accounts totalling £l6B 5s Bd. Employment of a groundsman £29 12s and rent and rates £27 9s 9d were the largest items of expenditure. The club had assets totalling £ll3 19s lid. Since the balance-sheet had been made up,, a pavilion haxl been erected and paid for by a “popular girl” contest. The seventh annual report showed there were 44 members, 29 ladies and 15 men. There had been 24 members for the winter season and the receipts show-' ed a balance of £8 is 3d after paying interest 'on the hard court loan. During' the season a match had been played with the A and B teams from the Park Club, the Park teams being successful in each match. A great deal of interest had been created by the club championship, but for various reasons the finals were not played. It was apparent that the championships should have to be started much earlier in the season if they were to be completed. The men’s doubles had been won by Messrs. Martin and Beres-’ ■ford. Only ono round had been played in the ladies’ doubles. Misses Alexander and Simmons were left in the ladies’ ■ Singles,, Messrs. H. Holden and C. Morshead in the men’s singles and Morshcad and Miss Colson and Martin and Miss Reid in the combined doubles.

NEW PAVILION ERECTED. For many years the need for a pavilion had been felt. Early in the yea.r the members had been asked to contribute Is per month towards a pavilion fund. As over 40 members agreed to do so the committee had felt justified in going on with the proposition. The building had been opened on August 10, all the work being done by voluntary labour. In this connection the committee desired to thank Mr. J. Martin for setting out ' and supervising the work, and the committee was also grateful to Messrs. L. J. Slyfield, L. Valentine and L. Thompson for giving up a Saturday afternoon to do the electric wiring. With the idea of commencing to pay for the material used for the pavilion, a “popular girl” contest was inaugurated. The result, a surprising one, was still fresh in their minds. The pavilion had been paid for and the club was therefore in a very good position financially. The committee again expressed its thanks to the candidates and their

committees. It was. impossible to mention the names of all who had worked for the club but. they. placed on record the names of the candidates and their secretaries, ..Miss Simmons, secretary Miss. Drury; Miss Colson, secretary Mrs. Chivers; Miss. Holden, secretary Mrs. Zorn; Miss Giddy, secretary Miss N. Andrews. Mr. Gosnell enlarged on the annual

report and stated that the finances of the club were in a sufficiently healthy position for them to look forward to a most successful season. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted: President, the Rev. R. B. Gosnell; club captain, Mr. A. Beresford; vice-captain, Mr. E. Holden; hon. secretary and as-

sistant secretary, Mr. J. Zorn; treasurer, Mr. H. Olias. Gatland; delegate to Taranaki Association, Mr. E. Holden; hon. auditor, Mr. H. Holden; committee, Messrs. C. Morshead, J. Zorn, W. W. Blair, Mrs. Craig, Misses I. Colson and V. Drury; greens committee, Messrs. A. Beresford, E. Holden and the Rev. R. B. Gosnell.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring officers for their efforts during the past twelve months# On the suggestion of the committee it was resolved to change the name of the club from the Fitzroy Methodist Tennis Club to the Fitzroy Tennis Club. The drafted set of new rules from the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association was

referred to th. wmmitteo for .onsidera. U Th. date of the official opjriM of the doh wm left la th. hand. of committee. ' ’ . •
