SUCCESSFUL TAWHITI DANCE. ; ~ • t DEBT ON THE HALL LIQUIDATED. One of the most enjoyable of Tawhiti’s dances was held in the hall on Friday night and, despite adverse weather conditions, proved to be a most successful function. From the start the bright music of Coburn’s orchestra and the efficient work of Mr. H. Steffert as master of ceremonies sent the dance along with a swing. The introduction of confetti and streamers into a number of dances added a further touch of brightness, while two novelty dances were keenly contested, the honours going to Miss S. Death and. Mr. T. Burke and Miss Cairns and partner respectively. Extras were contributed by Misses Duggan and Emmett and Mr, P. Steffert. The excellent decorative and supper arrangements were in the capable hands of Tawhiti’s usual energetic workers, especially Mesdames J. B. Laurenson, Pickering, and. A. Appleyard, and Messrs. J. B. Laurenson, A. Appleyard and D. McGlade. It is noteworthy that as a,result of this season’s functions the balance of the debt on the hall, amounting to £22, has been cleared, and the hall is now free from debt. This fact testifies to the united efforts of the hall committee throughout the ten years. A look into the past history of the Tawhiti district, .reveals the fact that shortly after the war it was decided to erect a hall at a cost, including the provision of a piano, of £7OO. The work was undertaken and. carried through by means of working bees with the help and advice of two builders. During' the period since the erection of the hall, systems of wizard. and. later electric lighting were installed and d? new piano purchased, the cost of these improvements involving a sum of over < £l-20.
