GENERAL AND PERSONAL ITEM& (From Our Own Correspondent.) The popularity of Miss Violet Baker, whose marriage to Mr. A. M. GordonGlassford is to take place shortly, was evidenced on September 16, when residents of the district congregated at the Mimi School to participate in a gift < evening. Dancing and competitions were indulged in during the. evening. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M. White and Mr. G. N. Skelton, and a flower competition by Miss V. Baker and Master C. Baker. Dance music was provided by Mr. and Mrs. R. Allen and Mrs. Gordon Saiway. The duties of master of ceremonies were carried out by Mr. A. M. Zimmerman. . Mr. J. F.: Phillips, on behalf of, those present, asked Miss Baker to accept a number of gifts.. Miss Baker and Mr. , Gordon-Glassford were representatives of two of the oldest and most respected families in the district, and they car-, ried with them the best wishes of all for their future happiness. Mr. GordonGlassford briefly responded. Songs Were rendered during the evening by Miss I£. Gibson and Mr. J. Johnson. The secretary of the Urenui Library Committee, Miss A. The Pukearuhe Hall funds were aug< mented a further £9 recently euchre and dance party vvas held. The function, organised by Mr. Syd. Moody,was a complete success, and the large number from Urenui, Okoke, Uruti arid surrounding districts. Eighteen tables were occupied in the euchre tournamerit, ? which resulted in keen competition, ;-a play-off being necessary for the prizes. Mesdamcs R. Luxton, J. Rockett, G. Baker and E. White, and Miss GordohGlassford were equal, and the final r'esulted in Mrs.. R. Luxton’s winning. Mr. E. White was victorious in the playoff with Messrs P. Carey and Holley for the men’s prize. After .refreshments. served by Mrs. Luxton’s committee, there was dancing to music supplied by Mr. G. Martin (accordeon), Mrs. J. Johnson and Miss M. White. Mr. Hugh Max-;; tin proved a most efficient master of ceremonies. An anonymous donor has given a. useful farm -horse to be auctioned; on.?. behalf of the hall funds. A pleasant time was spent-at the fesiderice of Mr. and Mrs. E. Mowat, who hold a gift evening on Monday in Miss Violet Baker’s honour. A large number of friends gathered and the major part I of the evening was spent in a pro-.il gressive euchre tournament. The ladies* I competition was won by Miss Violet?! Baker and the men’s by Mr. Fred. Phil- I lips, Mr. J. Mooney and Miss V. Schieb I being the winners of . the “booby” prizes. I A competition was- won by Miss D. I Phillips and HG J- Carr. Dancing was | interspersed with musical and elocution- ■ ary items, songs being rendered, by Miss I E. Gibson, Miss V. Schieb (recitations), I Mr. Gerald Carr (pianoforte solo) and I Mr. Max. Jonas (humorous stories). I A gala day was held at the Mimi;B School in the form of a basketball ■ match between local pupils and a team ■ from the Pukearuhe School, who were Ml the care of Mrs. Brightwell. Bar.naekers I from the respective schools tei’ned out J in full force,, and after an exciting gained the local school ehiergcd victorious ’by I nine goals to two.
