THE BOBBY CALF INDUSTRY
QUESTION OF CRUELTY INVOLVED. .DEPUTATION TO THE PREMIER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 27. When a deputation from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals waited on the .Hon. G. IV. Forbes, Minister of, Agriculture, today, reference was made to the bobby calf business. Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, said the age limit of five days was being much more rigidly enforced this year, and conditions generally had been much improved. The trade ( had been given a lot of attention by the department, and every effort was made to have the calves dealt with quickly. Everything possible was done to see that
they went through the minimum of suffering. Mr. Forbes said he was sure the officers of the department would co-oper-ate with the society to see that no cases of cnielty occurred. The whole question would be investigated.
