GOLF IN RAIN AND GALE
CHAMPIONSHIPS AT BELMONT SHAAV’S BRILLIANCE IN THE OPEN. HORTON FIVE STROKES BEHIND. DALE LEADS TARANAKI PLAYERS. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. After a spell of fine weather, and with the course at Belmont in excellent condition, it was most disappointing to find a charge in the weather when the first players in the 1929 New Zealand open championships took their place on the tee this morning. There was a strong southerly wind accompanied by driving showers which continued during the whole of the morning’s play. In the afternoon the rain ceased, but the wind increased, and it was bitterly cold. There was a record entry, and the field was without doubt the most classic that has yet participated in the New Zealand championships. The most conspicuous absentee in the amateurs* ranks was Dr. Ross. The professionals were represented by no less than 24 players. The Christchurch professional, H. R. Blair, who is engaged with the New Zealand ladies’ tournament, was unable to be present. The course is in excellent order, and the only drawback to-day was the weather. The first two rounds of the open championship were played. Taking the conditions into consideration, the golf of to-day was of a high order. The result of to-day’s play finds A. J. Shaw with a lead of four strokes. Shaw’s performance to-day stamps him as a player capable of taking his place in any company. He was only one over the standard scratch score, and but for slipping two strokes he might have equalled the par of the course. A repetition of his play to-day will give him the open championship. His golf was matchless and pretty to watch. Horton’s morning round equalled Shaw’s, but he dropped four strokes in the afternoon. Nevertheless there is nothing amiss with his game. Morpeth was by no means at his best. He has been indisposed since his arrival. There are indications that the weather is clearing, and if so there should be some fine scoring to-morrow. There should be keen competition to qualify among the amateurs, as the first 32 players to-day are all very close Ao one another. Following are the scores in the first and second rounds in the open championship (x denotes professionals): —
