LAWN TENNIS AT ELTHAM
SUCCESSFUL YEAR REVIEWED. CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Eltham Lawn Tennis Club was held last night, when there was a good attendance presided over by Mr. A. Chrystal. The balance-sheet showed a considerable improvement in the financial position as compared with the position at the end of last season. The proceeds from the annual ball were entirely satisfactory. ; The club had a very successful season, stated the report, friendly matches being exchanged with most of the clubs within easy distance. It was pleasing to note that notwithstanding the heavy wear on the courts they stood very well, but at the end of the season there was a shortage of turfing material, and it became necessary to sow down the end of several of' the courts. An innovation was made during the season in that primary school children were allowed to become, members at a nominal subscription and were allowed to play on two days a week. The children were in charge of one or other of their teachers, and instruction was given by Mr. Reeves. It was apparent at the end of the season that the children had benefitted considerably from their instruction and practice, and as these boys and girls will be the future members of the club it was considered the experiment was a complete success. During the year the annual North v. South match was played on the club’s courts. The club’s congratulations were extended 1 to Miss Cave and Mr. MacGregor, who represented Taranaki in Wanganui in a Christie Cup match. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr. T. Thompson; vice-presi-dents, Mr. G. H. Percy and Miss A. Wilson; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. O. Hill; match committee, Mr. A. L. Picard and the president and secretary, management committee, Messrs A. L. Pickard, G. H. Percy, R. H. Cover, J. Walshe and G. D. McGregor, and Mesdames Wykls and Crawford; ground committee*, Mr. G. Percy; ladies’committee, Mesdames Wylds and Crawford and Misses H. Wilson, Ritter? Slater, Brooker and Walker; delegate to the Taranaki Tennis Association, Mr. A. L. Picard. The meeting concluded with a vote of ’ thanks to the outgoing committee, and one to the chairman. . CAMP SITE IMPROVEMENTS. PARTY SEARCHES FOR IDEAS. The committee of members of the Stratford Domain Board, representatives of the Stratford branch of the South Taranaki Automobile Association and the borough foreman who visited Wanganui on Thursday spent a busy day investigating types of pavilions which might bo taken as models in planning the buildings it is proposed to erect on the Stratford camping site and in viewing various municipal, enterprises in the river city. At the camping ground at Aramoho the visitors were impressed by the simple yet efficient method of supplying gas for cooking purposes to campers They were informed that a penny dropped in the slot would furnish 12 feet of gas, sufficient for over an hour’s burning, while the facilities contained in the shelter housing the gas rings were deemed of great convenience. The Aramoho residence with tea rooms attached did not present many novel features but served to- illustrate how well the two could be combined. In the course of their visit to the Wanganui city plant, the committee was greatly impressed by the elaborate machine for preparing “hot-mix,” stationed at jonville, where suitable deposits of shingly sand enable that class of bitumen ar I tar to be preferred at low cost. Everything is weighed into the boiler where tar and bitumen are mixed and heated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Suitable grades of sand or shingle, according to the nature of the work in progress, are then run into the boiler and the resulting “hot-mix”. is taken in steel lined lorries and laid on the footpaths while still hot. A footpath I laid by this system was stated to require no attention until the half-inch depth of surface cushion was w’orn through, in approximately 12 or 14 years.
