ENTRANCE TO PORT RESERVE

HARBOUR BOARD’S NEW STREET. DEPUTATION FROM COUNCIL. The new road at present being constructed in the vicinity of the oil storage installations at Moturoa to give access to the Harbour Board’s extensive reserve was the subject of a deputation to the board yesterday. The deputation, which represented tho New Plymouth Borough Council, comprised Crs. J. Brown and F. J. Hill and the engineer (Mr. C. Clarke). As chairman of the works committee of the council, Cr. Brown said he wished to draw the attention of the board to tho fact that tho engineer did hot consider the new road was safe. In the first place the road was not wide enough. There was room for only one vehicle on the filling, which was built on sand, and would be very unsafe if a lorry was. driven a little to one side. ' A second point was the .’matter ol water supply. The council was anxious that the board should lay a four inch main straight away, as it would have to be done ultimately when the land was cut up. Mr. Clarke: The main trouble is the water supply. We must have a firefighting pressure, especially as there are the oil tanks in . the vicinity. The Harbour Board engineer (Mr. G. W. B. Lowson) explained that the road was not completed yet. According to the board’s direction, it would be widened to 30 feet. A certain amount of metal had been laid as soon as it was wide enough to allow of the passage of a vehicle, in order that an oil company might get material in for its installation. Mr. E. Maxwell said he thought there was probably a misunderstanding. It was probably not realised that the men employed on the road construction had been temporarily transferred to the block yard to make more concrete blocks. Mr. Clarke: Twenty feet would be quite wide enough. In reference to the water main the chairman of the board ■ (Mr. C. E. Bellringer) explained that the board could not go to the expense of paying at the present time for a four-inch main. However, if the oil company concerned would instal a four inch main, no doubt the board would agree to purchase it when the time came for cutting up the property.
