LONG-DISTANCE TELEPHONE

NEW SERVICES INAUGURATED.

By Telegraph.—Press Association

Wellington, Sept. 5.

The recent improvements in the. long distance telephone service were inaugurated to-day by a gathering in the exchange at which the Hon. J. B. Donald, Postmaster-General, presided. He delivered a short address and gave some technical details of the methods adopted. '

The Alayors of Wellington. Auckland, the Deputy Alayor of Christchurch and the Alayor of Dunedin followed and after, them the presidents of the Chambers of Commerce at Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin and the vicepresident at Auckland. Each spoke brieuy and some amusement was caused by the Deputy Alayor of Christchurch in reference to the woeful condition of his district in telephone facilities, from which it was now to be released.

All the speakers were heard very distinctly, except the Alayor of Dunedin, who was rather faint at first, but. improved before he finished. The other Dunedin speaker was heard very clearly.
