ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS.

LIBERATIONS OF TROUT FRY.

Tho Taranaki Acclimatisation Society met in New Plymouth last evening. Present; Messrs. W. R. Johns (chairman), N. Fookes, S. R. Darlow, T. V. Simons, N. S. James, T. Wilson, W. J. Bell and V. Duff (secretary). The president reported that the rainbow fry had all been liberated. They had arrived in excellent condition, being very well packed for consignment and standing the journey from Southland well. Good measure had been received, the number being well over the order given. . r , . , Tho Stratford Acclimatisation Society wrote concerning the condition of the Manganui River.at Tariki between the weirand the old hydro generating plant. As the river during the diiei months had practically no running water but was just a series of pools, said to be a death-trap for trout, tho Stratford society' suggested that it be made a sanctuary. . , It was decided to take no action m tho matter. A letter was received from tho Department of Internal Affairs referring an application from Mr. R. Williams, Rahotu, for permission to keep a pet opossum, to the Taranaki society. The society decided to write to the department stating it had not objection to the. animal’s being kept under the circumstances.

A bird fancier wrote stating he had been asked by a country client to procure two .pairs of magpies for liberation on his farm. Tho farmer stated that the birds kept hawks away from poultry. The fancier asked whether the society would have any objection. The society decided to obtain the Wanganui society’s opinion on tho matter., Brown trout fry are to bo liberated in the following streams: Waitara GOOD, Opunako 17,000, Kapawai 12,000, Warea and Waiweranui 10,000, Kaihihi 10,000, Tiinaru 5000, Oakura 10,000, Waiwakaiho 30,000, Mangorei and Te Hentii GOOD, Kahawai 10,000, Inglewood 20,000, Mangaraka 5000, Waiongona 9000. Rainbow trout fry have been liberated as follows: Waiwakaiho 24,000, Maketawa 10,000, Opunako 30,000, Okahu 10,000, Stony 24,000, Mt. Egmont GOOD.
