The death occurred on Saturday morning of Ned Wetere, a son of the old Maori chief Kingi Wetere. He had been ill only a few days, the last day or two of which had been spent in a state of coma. Ned Wetere was a well educated Maori, having studied for the law,. and in recent years had found occupation at the freezing works. On Friday evening the cricket enthusiasts resident on the east side of the Waitara River held a meeting to discuss the advisability of forming a club to be known as the Waiftra East Cricket Club.
