MEMORY OF 1923 DISASTER.

The approaching completion of the great task of reconstruction of the centre of the city was observed by one minute’s silence in memory of the earthquake disaster of 1923. The intoning of thousands of Buddhist priests briefly substituted raucous traffic noises. A mayoral message, following the example of the Government, urged the citizens to refrain from extravagance and urging them to work hard.
