ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

KEMPTHORNE PROSSER WIN

CALEDONIANS DEFEATED BY 2 TO 1

BRIGHT MATCH AT WESTERN PARK

Clean, bright and fast Association football on a dry ground was seen. at Western Park, New Plymouth, on Saturday, when Kempthorne, Prosser (Wanganui) won the annual match against Caledonians by two goals to one. Ihe passing and general combination of both teams was distinctly good and led to some exciting incidents, especially during the last few minutes when the teams surged up and down the field in determined efforts to score. The teams were: —

Kempthorne, Prosser--M:.’.!in. Neilson, Proudfoot, Davidson, Archer, Mackay, Hope, Dick, Heath, Meikle, Mclntyre.

Caledonians. —Corringham, L. Henderson, Bell, Fawcett, Randell, Quay, J. Thomson,. Bremer, Griffen,. Gardner, Hill. Kempthorne, Prosser kicked oil and Mclntyre sent a long kick forward for Fawcett to return. Again the visitors passed up and attacked, but Henderson saved well with his head, in front of the goal. Caledonians rushed upfield and Thomson sent to Bremer, who centred finely to Hill. Hill missed a good opportunity by sending the ball to the side of the net. Following several further attacks on their goal, Caledonians again pressed and Thomson obtained a fruitless cornei’ off Mackay. Kempthornes Returned to the attack and Hope sent ;n from the side. There was a melee in the goal-mouth and a shot hit the bar and bounced back. Mclntyre at once rushed in and netted, placing the visitors ono up. Caledonians rushed determinedly to the other goal, where Bremer and Thomson were concerned in an attack. The best that came of it was a corner, however. The ball was again returned to Caledonians’ goal, where the defence was found to be too strong. Later Heath soloed downfield in a fine dribble, McIntyre being in close attendance. Henderson stopped the rush and returned the ball to the other half, where Caledonians were awarded a corner. Soon afterwards Neilson stopped an onslaught by Gardner, but Hill took up the running and sent in a well-directed high shot for Martin to catch it. A minute later Griffen headed into the goalie’s hands. Caledonians evened the scores a moment later when, tho visitors having cleared a corner kick, Randell filled the breach and shot a beautiful goal. Griffen came again and centre 1, but no one was there to support him and Archer’ cleared. Immediately the visitors retaliated and Hope shot for Henderson to clear. Then Gardner promoted a Caledonian onslaught that was stemmed by Mackay. Following an attack by the visitors Hill received, only to be dispossessed by Neilson. Gardner was ready, however, and sent in a swinging shot that just missed. Mclntyre looked as though he were a sure scorer, but Bell saved by kicking behind. Thp resulting corner was of no advantage to the visitors. Mclntyre was dispossessed by Bremer who, however, could not get past Mackay. Instead, he sent back to Fawcett, who relieved the pressure. Randell sent to Gardner, to Griffen, to Thomson in a, pretty passing movement, but Proudfoot intercepted the shot. Hill centred nicely and Griffen headed against Archer. There was a tussle and the ball rebounded into Martin’s hands. Bremer received from Gardner and put a ground shot towards the goal, Martin having no difficulty in fielding it. From a throw-in Mclntyre dribbled towards the net. Henderson, running ahead, kicked towards his own goal to save, and the ball landed from on high into Corringham’s hands—a narrow escape. Heath rushed in but Bell saved. Randell received in midfield and passed to Gardner, who sent on to Hill. Hill dodged several defenders to send a really fine side shot to the net—well saved by Martin. Less than a minute later the same goalie stopped another good shot from Gardner, despite the fact that the opposing forwards attempted to bustle him. The spell ended with the scores even, ono all. • After the interval Henderson exchanged positions with Thomson. Kempthornes pressed with determination and Corringham was well tested. Then Martin was treated somewhat similarly. He •saved a good one from Quay and later another from Gardner. There was considerable excitement when Kempthornes rushed down in a fine passing movement. Their combination could not be broken, it seemed, and Meikle arrived in front of the goal to shoot. Corringham made a remarkably fine save. The visitors re-

turned to the attack in a similar fashion and Corringham had to come out to save a good shot. Before he could get back Archer sent in, but his shot topped the bar. Gardner and Hill were prominent in an attempt on Kempthorne’s net, but could not sustain the effort in the face of the defence of Neilson, Davidson and Archer. Gardner sent in a fine overhead shot that was just stopped by Martin. Griffen rushed in but was held to be offside. Hill got possession on the side and when tackled by Neilson sent a good centre to Gardner and on io Henderson whose shot topped the bar. Mclntyre sent to Heath but the shot was too high. Gardner shot, but the ball was headed away by Proudfoot. At the other end Bell saved well when Meikle was in a scoring position. A corner to Caledonians was turned away by Archer. Randell sent a long pass to Henderson, whose shot was stopped by the goalie. Archer kicked a long way to Dick, who tested Corringham. Caledonians were trying hard for a score but coilld not get through, and the ball went downfield for a corner to Caledonians. The ball was well centred by Henderson, Martin made a good send away and tho ball was returned to Corringham’s end. Hope received and went strongly on, passed a back or so and, after a good run, scored Kempthorne’s second goal. It was a. brilliant shot. The pressure was maintained amid great excitement and a fine shot by Heath hit the post. Griffen and Hill took the ball downfield, but were troubled by Davidson. From a line-out in scoring territory Hope kicked away. Kempthornes again attacked. Mclntyre shot from the side and the ball was put behind. The corner was resultless. Caledonians returned to the attack and obtained a corner without any advantage accruing. The match ended some minutes later with the scores still: — Kempthorne, Prosser 2 Caledonians ~ 1 Mr. J. R. Spcdding was the referee. THE VISITORS ENTERTAINED. DINNER AND DANCE TO TEAM. On Saturday evening the visiting team were the guests of the Caledonian Club at dinner at the Waratah dining room. Mr. W. W. Thomson, patron of the Caledonian Club, jrcsided, associated with him being Mr. D. N. Campbell, president of the Kempthorne, Prosser Club, Mr. G. Wordsworth, vice-president, and Mrs. Wordsworth, and representatives of the other senior teams in New Plymouth. Mr. Thomson said that despite that day’s defeat he understood Caledonians were still one np. He welcomed the visitors and said he was pleased they had won. Mr. Campbell thanked the •New Plymouth players for the welcome they had extended -and for tho really good game they had provided. It was a hard game right through. His team had suffered two defeats last year, and ho was sorry there was no hope of them having a double victory this year, as he understood there was no prospect of the Caledonians returning tho visit. Next year he hoped, however, there would be home and home games. The visitors’ victory was largely due, lie- said, to the sporting act of the New Plymouth players in allowing the substitution of a man half way through tho game. After a number of toasts had been honoured a dance was held in Hooker’s sample room. Mr. R. Bell was master of ceremonies and Mrs. N. G. Bremer supplied tho music. WELLINGTON SENIOR GAMES.
