ELECTRIC LIGHT DANCE
STRIKING DECORATIVE SCHEME. “One of the most successful dances in Taranaki this season” is an apt description of the Hawera County Electric Company’s staff dance, which took place in the winter show buildings on Friday night. The decorative scheme throughout the building was a feature of the function and reflected credit upon the resourcefulness and energy of those responsible for the work. Upon entering the lower portion of the hall one was confronted by a long narrow walk covered with greenery and. extending to the foot of the stairs, where it. opened out into a magnificent green bamboo archway interlaced with greenery in profusion. The stairs also had received their share of greenery. The scene in the dance hall itself was striking. The whole of the roof was hidden with streamers of amber and blue, from out of which three brilliantly lit electric chandeliers hung above the heads of the dancers, the mass of streamers being also profusely - studded with electric lights. On the walls a scheme of indirect lighting was utilised, the lights being partly enclosed in 27 boxes, each bearing a letter on it, the whole constituting the inscription, “Ha,wera Cty. Electric Staff Dance.” In the decorative scheme over uJO white and coloured electric lamps Were used, controlled by switches and a rheostat from a switchboard in the corner of the hall. The lighting effects and the light used were provided by the directors of the company, who also donated to the dance committee all (he lights and lighting effects. Cooperation between directors and staff was largely responsible for the .success of the function. The greenery used in decorating was donated by Miss Lysaght, Mokoia. All the arrangements were in the hands of an energetic staff committee, with Mr. P. W. Lamb as chairman and Mr. L. C. Storm as secertary. The attendance was estimated at considerably over 500. Visitors in large numbers attended from New Plymouth, Patea, Waverley, Wanganui and most of the Taranaki towns, as well, as the country districts. The tables in the supper where a delicious supper was served, were tastefully decorated with cyclamen and maiden-hair fern. The catering was in the hands of Mrs. Instone. Several novelty dances proved enjoyable, especially the ever-popular streamer and confetti dances. A lucky spotwaltz was won by Miss J. Hicks and Mr. J. Edwards, while Miss Finlayson and Mr. Peterson won the Monte Carlo waltz. Coburn’s star orchestra provided the music, while ■ Mr. R, P, Morrissey was master of ceremonies. Extras were played by Mrs. Muir, Miss Nina Smith I and Messrs. L. Polson and G. Meyrick. |
