LOCAL INDUSTRY ASSISTED
RAILWAY BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION.
By Telegraph—Press Association.
Wellington, August 30.
In a statement to the Press to-day the Hon. W. B. Taverner gave some interesting particulars regarding the programme of the Railway Department. . The policy of giving New Zealand industries as much support as possible is exemplified in the recent acceptance of tenders for the Ngaruawahia and Whcnuakura bridges. Steel plates and shafts of a total of 500 tons will be imported from Great Britain, but the whole of the fabrication of steel work will be done in the Dominion.
The successful tenderers are: Ropo, for Ngaruawahia, and Bird and Codling Bros, for Whenuakura. In addition to the encouragement of local industry, these bridges mark the beginning of an extensive programme of reconstruction of old timber bridges in steel and concrete, to take the heavy type of engines now employed. Ihe Whenuakura bridge is near Pa tea. The Ngaruawahia bridge crosses the V aikato River.
