GRANT TO HIGHWAYS BOARD

EXPLANATION BY PREMIER

By Telegraph—Press Association.

Wellington, Last Night. Sir Joseph Ward referred in the House of Representatives to-day to the subject of the Highways Board. Ho said the amount of £200,000 would be paid as usual to the board. There had been a misunderstanding on that> point. Last year both the Public Works Fund and the Consolidated Fund had been in a flourishing condition. This year they had not a balance that would enable the money to be paid over free of interest. The Government would have to borrow money for the purpose, and all that the Highways Board was asked to do was to pay the interest.
