DISTRICT MEWS

HURWORTH. What a glorious time the children of the Frankley Sunday school had on Sunday last! First of all their teacher, Mr. Gordon Smith, called at their homes and took them by motor to Sunday school for the afternoon, each child carrying a small packet of something good towards tea at the school. After Sunday school a few mothers arrived and prepared and served a much more enjoyable tea than the one at home would have been, and directly the tea was over three car-loads of happy children were taken to New Plymouth and provided that excellent programme at 2YB at the children’s hour.”

There have been two rather unusual accidents to animals, both being the cause of death, here lately. The first happened to a valuable Jersey cow when on going through a hole in a fence, she deeply imbedded her horn in a wooden post, thereby throwing her head right back on her shoulder, and in this position she was found by her owner next morning—dead. The second happened to a cart horse. When on the way to the factory with a load of milk it suddenly took fright and, jumping sharply to one side, broke its foot and had to be destroyed. After playing each week for the whole of the winter months, Mrs. F. King and Mr. L. Hill were the winners of the aggregate prizes for euchre. The winners for the evening were Mesdames Waters and C. C. Gilbert and Messrs. J. Jans and C. McKea. The athletic club football team are to visit Hur worth this week end for a friendly game. If other districts report tame annual meetings this cannot be said of the Frankley Road Dairy Company’s meeting, held on Thursday night, when about 40 shareholders attended, and it was midnight before anyone started to go home. Mrs. Percy Gilbert left by yesterday’s train for a visit to Wanganui.

Mr. Bert Brown left this week to take up a position on the staff of the Warea cheese factory.
