LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION

ESSAY COMPETITION PROPOSED. The possibility of arranging an essay copetition in the schools was discussed at the monthly meeting of the council of the New Plymouth branch of the League of Nations Union yesterday. Those present were Mesdamcs Ayckbourne, Douglas (W.C.T.U.), Misses Tiehbon (Girls’ High School), Drew, Pym, Messrs. Goldsbury (chairman), McHardy and Richards (secretary). With the idea of following up Hie good work done in the schools by the visit of Mr. Featherstone, it was suggested by Mr. Richards that the headmasters of tho schools in which Mr. Featherstone had lectured should be approached with a view to instituting an essay competition on tho work of the league. It was proposed to award a book prize to every school competing and a guinea membership in the league to the winner of the competition. From the point of view of the headmasters, Mr. Goldsbury said ho thought that by providing prizes they would very likely meet with some opposition, as many headmasters were not in favour of allowing this competitive spirit to creep into their schools. He suggested that the masters should be asked to give their consent before anything else was done.

Miss Tiehbon said that owing to Hie proximity of the school holidays it would be impossible to do anything until next term.

Reviewing the league’s activities during the month Mr. Richards stated that although prominent business men of New Plymouth had been circularised for membership the response had been very small. He thought Hie members of the league should arrange functions on August 27, the date of the signing of the Kellogg Pact and on Armistice Day. The difficulty with August 27 was that it would clash with two other functions. It was agreed to approach the Choral Society with a view to obtaining its permission to givo a short lecture in the interval of its concert.
