MAN AND GIRL IN DUG-OUT
THEFT CHARGES AT NAPIER GIRL RETRACTS CONFESSION. BOTH REMANDED FOR SENTENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. , Caught in a dug out in “Monkeyiand,” near Fernhill, in possession of goods for which they could not account, Robert Forbes Raverty, an Australian, aged 22, and Irene Campbell Pryce, a Taradale g.rl, aged 17, who had been living in the improvised home for some, days, appeared at the Supreme Court this afternoon before Mr. Justice MacGregor. They were jointly indicted on a charge of breaking, entering and theft of goods valued at £l9. . Further charges were brought against Raverty of stealing goods at Taradale valued at £7 and eix charges of forgery involving £lOO were made. Raverty pleaded guilty and was remanded for sente The girl Pryce pleaded not guilty, and in the course of her defence stated the confession made to the police was not true, and she had made it in the belief that sharing, of the guilt mignt lighten the sentence on Raverty. The jury, however, did not accept this recantation and found the girl guilty With a strong recommendation to mercy because of her youthfulness, believing she was under the influence of Raverty. She was remanded for sentence.
