RACING AT STRATFORD
REVENUE WELL MAINTAINED.
AMOUNT OF STAKES INCREASED.
The annual meeting of the Stratford Racing Club was held last night, when Mr. S. Pitt presided over a good attendance of members.
The club’s operations for the past year had been very successful, stated the annual report. The sum given in stakes at the annual race meeting had been increased to £3Bll Is 6d and the profit on the race meeting account had amounted to £2371 Os 5d after Government taxation amounting to £3916 Os 7d had been paid. The net profit carried to capital account was £932 11s lOd, after £403 6s 6d had been written off the assets by way of depreciation. The operations of the farm committee as disclosed by the stock account showed a profit of £339 ISs 7d. . The revenue of the club had been fully maintained with the exception of the totalisator turnover, which showed a- decrease on the first day of the meeting owing to the adverse weather prevailing on that day. The attendance at the annual race meeting was again very satisfactory as evidenced by the gate receipts for the two days which amounted to £2154 5s 2d. The increased'stakes resulted in high-class horses competing at the meeting. The club’s private road through the native bush had been bitumen sealed and was in excellent order.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Officers elected were:—President, Mr. S. Pitt; vice-president, Mr. H. E. Abraham; members of committee, Messrs A. Stewart and H. M. Good, auditor, Mr. T. H. Penn.
The committee’s .action in donating £lO 10s to the earthquake relief fund was endorsed. A donation of £5 5s was made to the Stratford A. and P. Association
Members’ privileges at the race meeting will remain as in past years.
Endorsement of the committee’s action in offering to provide £25 towards the Stratford Hospital ambulance fund was made. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Reporting on the Landlord and Tenant Act to t'he Stratford Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, the president (Mr. J. B. Richards) stated that it was a drastic measure, and, while in older countries it might be necessary, immediate action did not seem urgent in Stratford. The cities probably felt the need of same, and it would probably be as well to advise the Associated Chambers executive that in the opinion of the Stratford®Chamber any move in this direction should emanate from a city Chamber. The Canterbury Chamber forwarded a memorandum urging the Government to follow the example of all business organisations and reduce its overhead expenses to a reasonable figure and taxation to what the Dominion can afford to pay. It was decided that the Canterbury movement be supported. Mr. T. 0. Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, wroth that at present he could not suggest a date on which he could meet the chamber and discuss matters arising from the industrial conference. About the end of August, however, he might be able to make the desired visit. " It was decided to ask Mr. Bishop to name a date when he could come to Stratford. “That the Government be urged to appoint a commission to report to Parliament on existing undesirable infringements of private rights and recommendations to rectify these infringements,” was a remit submitted by the president to the conference.
