WAITARA SCHOOL CONTROL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Waitara School Committee, presided over by Mr W. Glasgow, was held on Monday evening. The chairman reported that the school paddock lease had been renewed and the fences had been put in repair. A new gate had been made by Mr. Pizzey and Mr. Andrews had made saddle racks. Mr. Coe had donated straining posts, The headmaster reported the roll was 345. Misses Lewis and Hurle had severed their connection with the school at the end of July, and Miss Eliot and Miss Jones were filling the positions. Mr. D. Brown would leave the staff at the close of the term. For the second successive year the school football fifteen won the championship for Taranaki. Mr. Ridling, supervisor of agriculture, had expressed satisfaction of the work seen. Examination for the second term was now in progress. As the early afternoon trains had been cancelled, parents had been put to inconvenience by the late homecoining of the pupils. It was proposed to engage a bus for the children and apply to the Education Board for a subsidy. It was possible to secure a bus at 15s per day and in order to support 30 children were required. To date 18 children had. brought parents’ permission to travel by bus. Some parents were willing to contribute towards the bus fares, but a charge of 30s among ten or 12 parents was perhaps too much to expect. The headmaster was of the opinion that if parents understood the scheme better more children would patronise the bus project. It was decided to write to the convent thanking the members who filled places in the school fifteen. After tl 1 committee had discussed the bus travelling project, the headmaster offered to visit the parents concerned and Mr. Purdie offered to assist the headmaster by the use of his car. A letter received from the board congratulated the committee on the satisfactory standard of physical .training at the school. The chairman stated that all the subsidv in connection with the ground improvements had been received with the exception of £5O, which would not come to hand until the completion of the work. Details of grassing various places at the school was left in the hands of Messrs Wilson, Purdie and Browning. It was decided to forward to Mr. D. Brown, who is severing his connection with the school, a letter of appreciation of his services.
