EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS
SMALL GAIN IN 12 WEEKS.
SOUTH ISLAND IMPROVEMENT.

A working profit of £52,599 is shown by the Railway Department’s account for the four weeks ended June- 22, this being £1595 less than in the corresponding period last year. The gross earnings were £595,571, and the expenses £542,972. The former shows an increase of £1’2,683, but the expenses are higher by £14,278. The working profit in the North Island was £19,312, as against £32,037 last year. Tho revenue was lower by £2361, but expenses ' increased £10.772. In the South Island the net revenue was £ll,BBB, as against £5995, receipts having increased £6961 at an additional expense of only £lO6B. Miscellaneous revenue was £21,399, as against £16,161. For the period of 83 days from April to June 22, the working profits have been £281,710, as against £279,675 in 84 davs last year and £335,085 (86 days) in* 1927. This year’s total comprises £120,198. from the North Island railways, a decrease of £28,017 j 103,541 from the South Island railways, an increase of £30,376; and £57,971 fiom miscellaneous; .services, a decrease of £324.
