RAIDS ON GAMING HOUSES
THREE CONVICTIONS SECURED. By Telegraph—Press Association Auckland, ■ Last Night. ‘ ” As the result of a visit paid by Detective-Sergeant McHugh to a sweet shop in Symonds Street yesterday afternoon, Frank Louis Jenner, aged 41, pleaded guilty at the Police Court' to a charge of using the premises as a common gaming house. ' '
Chief Detective Hammond said the accused was only in a small way of ■business in the betting line, but ha ; ’ took £29 in bets yesterday. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., imposed a fine of £25 in default two months' imprisonment. ’ • Later to-day, as the result of further police raids, Ada McNaughton, aged 51, a tobacconist in Kyber Pass Road, and Ellen Matthew, aged 42, of Mount,Eden Road, were charged with carrying on the business of bookmaking, and charges of being unlawfully on premises used as a common gaming house were preferred against their husbands, John McNaughton and Charles James Matthew. The charges against the men were withdrawn by the police, while the two' women pleaded guilty. The police said'Mrs. McNaughton' had : been doing silver betting; Mrs. Matthew, ' ” ’ who'had a fishmonger’s shop, was on the same level, but had been doing more business.
Each of the accused was fined. £25, in default two months’ iipprisonment
