AN ASSOCIATION FORMED. That a West Coast (South Island) association bo formed in Stratford was a motion passed by a public meeting of Stratford ex--West Coasters over which Mr. I*. bkoglund presided last night. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. P. Skoglund; secretary, Mr. S. C. Dunbar; treasurer, Mr. T. O’Neill; general committee, Messrs. G. Lamplough, F. Kear, B. Vinsen, T. Bulman, J, Lyons, C. irfimplough, C. Lindop, F O’Hearne, A. Thomas and J. AlcGasgill. A large committee of ladies was also appointed. It was decided to hold a dance on July 18, the proceeds from which will be added to the earthquake relief fund. Members' subscriptions were fixed at 2s Cd. W.C.T.U. CONFERENCE. PROVINCIAL DELEGATES MEET. The Taranaki conference of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Thursday at Eltham, Mrs. M. T. Phillips presiding over about 70 delegates. In welcoming the delegates Mr. I. J Bridger, Mayor of Eltham, said the union was working for the betterment of the country, and particularly that of the women and children. There could always bo detected the unselfish thought and consideration for the “other fellow” in all the resolutions and opinions expressed by the union from time to time. That was why it was so greatly respected and its work admired.

Miss Rita Crozier, president of the Y branch of the union, extended a welcome to the delegates on behalf of the Eltham branch.

Airs. Phillips replied on behalf of the conference and expressed thanks for the welcome that had been given the delegates. > ■ ■ In the evening Mrs. Perryman, editor of the White. Ribbon, gave an address on tire work of the union.

GENERAL ITEMS.

Much music will be the order at the West Coast dance. Two bands and two orchestras, it was reported at last night’s public meeting, had offered their services free of charge.

In spite of the cold weather there was a good attendance at Hie Stratford Miniature Rifle Club’s shoot on Thursday night. Though there were no possibles scored, 23’s and 24's were in evidence. A match between a team chosen by Lyons and another chosen by Knewstubb resulted in a win for the former by 136 to H 7.

The three riders gaining the most points in the series of races held by the Stratford Cycle Club will be awarded cups. The positions so far arc: D. Coleman, J. Withers, each 5 points; E. Winmill, K. Mehrtcns, each 3 points; E. Stockman, J, Crockett, each 2 points; D. Wheeler, 1 point. The next race will be held on Thursday.

The Stratford Old Girls’ Basketball Club held a successful dance in the Parish Hall on Thursday night. The hall was prettily decorated with red and black, streamers. Several novelty dances were on the programme, and the popular Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. N. Waito and partner. Messrs. M. Thompson and A. Lindop were masters j>t ceremonies, and the Melody Four supplied music.

The national thanksgiving for the King’s recovery will be celebrated by a special service in the Stratford Methodist Church to-morrow at 7 p.m. The Rev. H. L. Bhimires will officiate, and a special form of service will be used, including the Te Deum. The Mayor, members of the borough council and of local bodies have been invited to attend and the executive of the Ex-Service League has requested its members to Join in the nation’s thanksgiving at this service.

To arrange for the continuation of the oobby calf pool a meeting of farmer? will bo held in the Midhirst hall on Tuesday at 8 p.m. Addresses will be given- bv the manager of the Patea Freezing Company (Mr, A. Williams) and by Mr. J. M. Smith, Department of Agriculture. ELTHAM MUNICIPAL THEATRE. ‘The Charlatan,” screening at the, Eltham Municipal theatre to-night, is a strong mystery drama. The feature of tho picture is the death of a society woman who enters tho magician’s box on a dare and is killed by a poisoned needle, and how tho Charlatan, by his uncanny methods, reveals tho criminal. The picture L most unusual, gripping and thrilling. “The Heart of Robert E. Lee,” a wonderful natural coloured film will also screen. The supports are a comedy and cartoon, with news to open. A real good programme. ADELAIDE BANK HOLD UP MAN AND WOMAN ARRESTED. By Telegraph—l‘rias Assn.—Copyright. Adelaide, July 4. In connection with the bank hold-up the police arrested a couple of motorists at the country town of Swanreach. The pair gave the names of John Walker, aged 3 27, and Lorraine Delanty, aged 22. Walker was charged with robbery under arms, but Delanty has not yet been charged. An armed robber held up tho North Adelaide branch of the Government Savings Bank at mid-night on Tuesday. Be shut the manager and his assistant in the vault, stole £6OO and escaped in a car driven by a woman.
