DISTRICT NEWS

URUTI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual fortnightly euchre party and dance was held on Friday evening, Juno 28. Owing to so many of tho residents being away on holiday, there was not such a large attendance as previously, but nevertheless there were about a dozen tables in use. Tho ladies’ prize was annexed by- Mrs. N. Jones and Mr. G. Murray won the men’s prize.. After the euchre a dance was held for a couple of hours, to music locally supplied. Mr. C. Laurent very capably fulfilled the duties of M.C. The next euchre party is to be held next week, and then comes the event of tho season, the bachelors’ and spinsters’ grand ball. The initial performance for this winter as far as this district is concerned was staged by the “Tin Can Band” at tho residence of Mr. and Mrs. G. Scott, on July 2, when a large gathering of residents welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Scott, who have recently been married, home. After the usual toasts had been honoured, everybody entertained each other with songs, recitations, etc. When things at any time began to lag Mr. Scott entertained with the wireless. A couple of farms in the district have changed hands recently at very satisfactory figures, and there is now another one which in all probability wiil have a new owner. For three days last week-end there was no less than three removals from the district and two to come in,. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Jones, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. R. Radcliffe, returned on Sunday from a motoring tour in the north. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Old have returned from a motoring tour in Hawke's Bay. Mr. and Mrs. J. Johnson left on Monday for Leppcrton, where they have acquired a farm. Mr. and Mrs. G. Scott haye now taken up their residence in tho township. Air. and Mrs. G. K. Oxenham and Mr. A. G. Oxenham returned on Wednesday from a motoring tour spent up north. Mr. and Mrs. H. McCabe have taken up their residence on one of Mr. 11. E. Ftigle’s farms. Mr. Douds, Mr. Dickie and Mr. Beattie have returned from their motoring trip to the Waikato. Mrs. W. J. Murray is spending a couple of weeks at Okoke.
