OUR POETRY

(Sent by Lottie Hamilton.) The sun sets o’er the mountains, In a beautiful amber light; Leaving behind it a wonderland, Which will soon bo claimed by the night. A LOSING GAME. (Sent by Avis Cleaver.) When Margaret was walking one cold, winter day. The wind, which waa high, blew hei bonnet away. “I’ve lost ray now bonnet,” she cried in despair, “The wind is unkind and I don't call it fair!" She lost her new hanky, the bosb one she had, Next lost all her patience, and sobbed “It’s too bad! “The lane is so muddy; oh! what shall I do?” And fast fell her tears, for she then lost a shod Poor Margaret! Her stockings were bedraggled and wet, Her face splashed with mud, she was very upset, She quite lost her way, and her temper as well, As, losing her footing, right over she fell. And there uncle found her, he rescued her shoe, And picked up her bonnet and handkerchief too; He wiped up the mud on her pre tty blue gown, And Margaret said “Thank you,” and quite lost her frown. (Sent by Dolly Jackson.) Building castles in the air, Heaping towers on high, Toying with the future there, Painting pictures in the sky. Looking earthwards with a sign, Building castles in the air, If I paused to wonder why, I might not build anywhere. (Sent by Bernice Hunt.) There’s a knowing little proverb, From the sunny land of Spain, But in Northland, as in Southland, Is it’s meaning clear and plain? Lock it up within your heart, Neither lose nor lend it; “Two it takes to make a. quarrel, One can always end it.” Let's suppose that both are wrath, And the strife begun; If one voice shall cry for “Peace!” Soon it will be done. If but one shall span the breach, He will quickly mend it, “Two it takes to make a quarrel, One can always mend it.” (Sent by Thelma Warburton.) When I am old and very rich, I’ll buy a loyely park, And let/the little children in, From early morn till dark. The little girls may pick the flowers, Great bunches if they wish, I’ll have a pond as big as a sea, Where little boys may fish. I’ll write some bills “Keep on the grass, And paddle if you choose,” My faithful little dog shall mind Your stockings and your shoes. ■ I’ll put a big refreshment tent Beneath the shady trees, And one and all may help themselves To anything they please, But if I see a single child, Throw orange peel about, I I’ll lead him gently to the gale And sadly show him out! CAN YOU GUESS THESE? Whv are clocks like grasshoppers?— Because they move by springs. What bow can no one untie?—-A rainbow. Why is a dark bpy sometimes a cheat? —Because he isn’t fair, (Smit by Thelma Warburton.) What is the easiest thing for a nigger to do? —Keep dark. When was beef the highest? When the cow jumped over the moon. (Scut by Lottie Hamilton.) Why arc the soldiers always tired in April? —Because they’ve just had a march of 31 days. Why is a dairymaid like a swallow? —Because one skims water and the other skims milk. (Sent by Mavis Stanton.) What can bo sewn without a needle? —• —Seeds. What pipe is impossible to smoke?-— The bagpipe. (Sent by Vera Lilis.)
