MANAIA SCHOOL COMMITTEE
REQUESTS MADE TO THE BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Manaia School Committee was held on Wednesday evening, there being present Messrs. A- Gamlin (chairman), G. H. Edwards, T. A. Bridge, J, T. Ctegue, W. Vincent, the Rev. R. Mil!er and Mrs. A. Gamlin. An apology was received from Mr. G. H. Butter. It was decided to apply to the Board of Education for the provision of a cycle shed for the protection of cycles belonging to children attending the school, also for furnishings for the teachers’ room, and increased capitation allowance. The chairman stated that the drivers of the school ’buses had been advised to take every precaution against accident to children travelling to or from School. The headmaster (Mr. J. Nairn) reported that the roll was 278 in the primary department, with an average attendance of 248. The secondary roll was 44, with an average of 41.3. The inspectors, Messrs. Griffin and Henry, .visited the school last week. It was resolved to write to the board regarding the provision of a dental clinic, an additional room and type-' writers for the school. It was also decided to draw the board’s attention to the inadequacy of heating at the high school building. The beautifying of the new school tennis courts was discussed, it being decided to proceed with the work and to accept Mr. R. H. Donald’s offer to supervise the laying out of the grounds. The provision of sugar and cocoa for the children at midday was agreed to by the committee, the matter of arranging for supervision by the teachers being left in the hands of Mr. Bridge.
