DISTRICT NEWS

AIOTUNUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The dog trials are now over for another year. The officials worked admirably throughout the recent meeting and it was due to this fact that the meeting passed off so smoothly and paid its way. The win of the local competitor (Air. J. Edwin, with his dog “Jed”) was well received here. His success may induce more local men to compete next year. The club has been encouraging competition among young and novice competitors, and in ths future there may be sufficient inducement to have a special class for local competitors only. On Wednesday, June 19, the annual ball will be held in the Waihi Memorial hall, and promises to outrival its predecessors. Miss Mary Cole is at present at Vogeltown. Alias Alexa McKay has returned to New Plymouth, after spending a few days in this district. Air. AV. Anscombe, ..Pio Pio, has been the guest of Air. W. Cole. Aliss Edna Cole is a present spending a holiday with her brother at Stratford: Air. and Mrs. Rackley (senr.), accompanied by Air. and Airs. Rackley (junr.), recently left by car for Auckland. Master Broncho Isaac, pupil of the local school, is at present in the public hospital. Air. H. Fitzsimons, with his son Douglas, is now at home after spending an extended holiday in South Island. OKATO NEWS. GENERAL MATTERS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The central vestry of the Okato parochial district met at the vicarage on Wednesday evening, the new vicar presiding for the first time. Representatives from the sub-districts of Rahotu, Puniho, Tataraimaka, Oakura, were present. At the conclusion of business Rev. Adams kindly provided supper. The vicarage is to be connected by telephone, an arrangement that should prove beneficial to many. An event of corrtderable importance to the Sunday school pupils will take place at the vicarage on Saturday afternoon next, when Aliss Walton is holding a children’s party. The torrential rainfall of last week heavily flooded the rivers. At the new Stony River bridge the height of the flood must have occasioned some anxiety to the contractors, much of their work being submerged. The site of this bridge is viewed with some trepidation in certain quarters. An enormous volume of water comes down in flood time, the river draining a large area at the back of the Pouakai range, and on the mountain, and it is felt that the bend at the bridge may cause trouble. A culvert on the Carrington Road, near Mr. Gill’s farm, was washed out, a« a result of the downpour, and is now receiving the attention of the county foreman. The warm weather of late, or the reduction of rates, has caused the broad acres to put on quite a spring-like appearance. The Okato and Puniho Dairy Company has sold the balance of its cheese at Bjd f.0.b., and their butter at Is 5Jd, the latter being May and June make. Now that slagging operations are in full swing, the farmer might profitably turn his mind to the price of this important fertilizer. The purchase price of. slag i g at present a real “pig in a poke” business. Until the price is fixed per unit, combined with a minimum solubility, the transaction will prove unsatisfactory. There is often a variation, ranging up to two units, in both high and low grades. As the price per unit is about 6s, and as the slag is purchased' before the Government analysis is available, it can readily be seen that the difference in value per ton in various shipments and brands mighti be very considerable. There was only a small attendance at Stony River sale on Tuesday, owing probably to the inclement weather. Prices were about the same as last week. A flock of turkeys were disposed of at 6s for hens and 10s for gobblers. Very few braved the elements to attend the weekly euchre party on Monday night. Airs. Dick Hill gained the ladies’ prize, and Air. Len Andrews the. gentleman’s.
