Paris, June 7.
It seems a possibility that more than one European country will engage in a tariff war against the United States. A congress, representing 500 Chambers of Commerce in France, passed a resolution protesting against the United Statesrincreasing protection, and calling on the French Government to take counter measures.
The congress suggested that various European nations, whose economic future is gravely menaced by the new tariffs, which are an insuperable barrier to most goods, should take united defensive action.
Brussels newspapers urge a boycott of American goods in view of the new tariff. They suggest an economical association under the auspices, of the League of Nations. A gesture of solidarity is likely to impress Washington.
The trade Press in Rome strongly condemns the new American tariffs.
Mr. C. G. Dawes, the newly-appointed U.S.A. Ambassador to Britain who is on his way from New York, is armed with explanations of the high’ tariff rates, against which there have been
British Government representations on behalf of English manufacturers, says the New York correspondent of the Daily Mail.
