FARMERS ON TOUR.

Both the railway authorities and the Farmers’ Union may be congratulated upon the successful organisation of interprovineial excursions for farmers. Reports published of the visit of Taranaki farmers to the South Island have shown that the tour has been worth while from every point of view. Despite somewhat different climatic conditions, there is no doubt practical farmers from this province have seen in the work and methods of those in the south some ideas that will be of value to them. They have also been afforded an opportunity of seeing some of the more important secondary industries, and will be in a better condition to adjudge their value to the Dominion, and particularly to the farming industry. Above all, the tour has widened social intercourse enormously. The personal contact with fellow producers that the excursion has made possible is sure to bear fruit in a better understanding of each other’s difficulties. It is not too much to say that the warmest recollection the travellers from Taranaki will bring back with them is the almost overwhelming hospitality that was afforded them throughout their tour. Next week this province will have an opportunity of showing its appreciation of the courtesies shown to its representatives by southern folk. On Monday upwards of 300 visitors from Southland will reach Taranaki, half of them coming to New Plymouth and the other half to Hawera. Drives and other methods of entertainment are being organised, and the assistance of motor-car owners and others in regard to transport and entertainment would be greatly appreciated by the organisation that has been set up for the purpose. Unfortunately the visit can only be a brief one, as the visitors are scheduled to leave on Wednesday morning, but so far as time will permit there is little doubt that everything possible will be done to make their visit to Taranaki pleasant and useful.
