ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

JULIAN CUP GAMES PLAYED HAWERA CELTIC BEAT RANGERS. CALEDONIANS NOTCH BIG SCORE. Displaying a little more knowledge of the finer points of theVgame, Hawera Celtic defeated Rangers by _ tw6 goals to nil in a Julian cup Association football fixture at Western Park on Saturday. Lack of initiative in attack cost Rangers the game, their forwards losing opportunities to put themselves in scoring' positions through being out of place or through faulty passing. The defence on both sides was solid, both H. and R. Olliver as full-backs and Shepherd in goal saving several awkward situations for Rangers. For Celtic Beare was generally safe at fullback, while Cowie, the goal-keeper, was tested only a few times. Cockerill, at centre-half, and Gibson, in the same position for Rangers, both played sterling games, the latter, who was called on to do a good deal of defensive work receiving support from Mecredy and Thomson. Among the forwards Smith and Reece were prominent in a good Celtic line, and Herdson and Remlall played well for Rangers. Celtic were in the home team’s territory from the kick-off, and five minutes after the game had started Smith obtained possession of the ball on the wing and took a long shot which struck the°cross-bar and was fended off by Shepherd. Frampton, following up fast, received the ball off Shepherd’s hands and netted, the goalie having no chance of saving. A second attempt by Smith failed and Atchley took the ball down and sent in a perfect grubber shot which beat Cowie badly, only to bounce back into play from the upright. Knight shot the ball into Cowie’s hands and Rendall kicked over the bar. Celtic were soon round Rangers’ goal again and a hot shot from Reece hit the bar. Three or four shots from Reece’s boot failed to find the net. Knight transferred play down field and compelled Cow’ie to concede a corner which was fruitless.': Half-timp was called with only the one goal registered. Celtic had the better of the opening exchanges, and good work by Smith and Frampton put' the latter in a position to test Shepherd, who cleared on the goal line. Reece, well up, rushed the ball into" the net, putting the Hawera team two up. Celtic had to defend until Cockerill cleared, but the home team failed to take advantage of their penetration of the Celtic defence, good chances going begging. The southern backs brightened, up and sent Knight and Rendall back when they were looking dangerous. Celtic seemed content to hold their opponents and Kendall, getting away from the men who were marking him, nearly scored from a difficult angle. Rangers'kept up the pressure and were conceded several cornel* in their desperate effort to score. I They met with no success and the game ended with the score: Celtic 2 Rangers 0 ; Mr. J. In a one-sided game at Fitzroy, Caledonians defeated Pirates by 12 goals to three. The absence from the Caledonian side of five of their regular team no doubt accounted for the dullness of the game, individual rather than collective play spoiling many movements which might have been interesting from the spectator’s point of view. The winners were three goals in the lead at the spell but Pirates played like a beaten team in the second term. Their play showed none of that crispness which had characterised ‘their efforts previously and the game was a succession of goals for Caledonians. The game as a whole lack- ; ed the snap and sparkle which both teams have displayed at different occasions during the season. Caledonians, playing against wind and sun, were quickly round their opponents’ goal-mouth, but Griffin was bustled when he essayed a shot, while PerryKeene was safe when Gardiner sent in a hot one. Brilliant defence by Henderson kept Pirates out when they advanced and Bremer transferred play upfield for Gardiner to net. Anderson equalised immediately and made a great attempt to secure the lead until play was switched back and Griffin received the ball to beat Perry-Keene -with a difficult shot. Caledonians kept up the pressure on Pirates’ goal, Smith finally sending a clever one past Perry-Keene. Pirates’ defence was completely demoralised and Griffin landed another goal, bringing the half-time score to: Caledonians 4, Pirates 1. The first of the eight goals notched in the second half came from Gardiner, who followed up fast when Griffin fumbled and gave the goalie no chance. Pirates’ short onslaught on the opposing goal was productive of a point from Anderson’s boot and when at the kick-off a Caledonian forward infringed Anderson was again successful from the penalty that was awarded. That was the last seen of Pirates in the Caledonian half of the field and the Scots proceeded to pile up the points, there being no defence to encounter. Gardiner, Bremer, Gardiner, Smith, Gardiner and Henderson found the net in that order before the 'whistle put an end to a dreary game which concluded with the score: Caledonians 12 Pirates 3 Mr, C. Farley referred.
